Facebook reinforces privacy and security amid growing threats

Better safe than sorry

Facebook has been experiencing a lot of heat lately for its involvement in the spreading of fake news, especially during the recently concluded US election period. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is adamant that misleading headlines aren’t enough to sway public votes, but the fact remains users are still prone to falling into traps when it comes to both privacy and security risks.

In an effort to tone down threats, the social media platform introduced a new site for disseminating resources and tips for better Facebook usage. Called Safety Center, the desktop- and mobile-friendly resource provides tips and informative videos for controlling what you share and how to tell right from wrong.

Facebook privacy

Always know who can view the content you upload

It’s available in over 50 languages, and also offers a bullying prevention section for parents and guardians who want to guide their kids. Although a lot of the information seems like common sense, they’re useful during dire times or when you really have no clue how to deal with annoying trolls.

Facebook claims that its teams do around 70 billion object privacy checks per minute to ensure your uploads don’t fall into the wrongs hands. Still, the social network advises everyone to check their activity log as often as possible, in order to monitor every action you’ve performed and who can see them.

Facebook security

Ensure your password is constantly updated, and keep it to yourself

Another vital part of Facebook’s initiative is Community Standards, which is a set of policies detailing what’s allowed and what’s banned for user-generated content. It covers online threats, criminal activity, and protection of intellectual property, to name a few.

If all else fails, just block or unfriend a person who makes you feel uncomfortable, whether it’s because he or she is a jerk or — maybe even worse — a spammer of fake news. You can then report the offender to Facebook’s support team, who apparently work 24/7.
