Despite the numerous leaks and teasers, we never would have expected Gionee to go this far with the M2017.
All the specs and features we wrote about two weeks ago are still here, from the pleasantly curved 5.7-inch Quad HD display and massive 7000mAh battery capacity (two 3500mAh batteries combined), to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 processor with 6GB of memory and up to 256GB of non-expandable storage.
In addition to the pair of 13- and 12-megapixel cameras at the back, there’s also an 8-megapixel selfie shooter in front. The only things we got wrong were the thickness and weight; the actual numbers are 10.78mm and 238g, respectively — still overly large.
But what really grabs attention is the price: It starts at an outrageous CNY 6,999 or a little over $1,000! That’s out of this world for a smartphone that can’t even outperform a OnePlus 3T, which is less than half the price.
Fortunately, the M2017 will only be available in China, so the number of alligators that’ll be sacrificed for such an absurd phone will be lessened.
By the way, there’s no 3.5mm headphone port for no good reason at all. Gionee is really losing its mind.
