Despite the increasing number of solid competitors, the Galaxy S8 is one of the best smartphones to come out this year. It just has one problem: Its screen isn’t as durable as you’d hope for.

The newly Galaxy S8 Active fixes that and more.

Gone are the curved edges of the Infinity Display in favor of a rugged design similar to past generations like the Galaxy S7 Active.

Although the original Galaxy S8 already has water resistance, the Active version is even more resilient against drops on the floor, dunks in water, and accidental spills thanks to a military-grade construction for its screen and frame.

Based on the smaller Galaxy S8 and not the S8+, the S8 Active owns a 5.8-inch Quad HD AMOLED display with the same elongated 18.5:9 aspect ratio. But since there’s more room available, Samsung was able to fit a much larger 4000mAh battery inside this model. That’s way more than the 3000mAh capacity of the plain S8!

The rest of the specifications are the same, from the super-fast Snapdragon 835 processor and 4GB of memory, to the single 12-megapixel rear camera and 8-megapixel selfie shooter.

Looks like we have recipe for excellence here, but there are a couple of caveats: One, it’s exclusive to US network carrier AT&T; two, the full retail price is US$ 850.

That puts the Galaxy S8 Active in the price range of the larger, sexier Galaxy S8+. Still, if durability matters and curved edges don’t, you’re better off going for this rugged variant.
