The now-non-fictional Nike Mag shoes from Back to the Future II — it’s the absolute definition of cool in the realm of sneakerdom, right? Virgin America disagrees; it reckons it has something better, something more dreamy than a pair of kicks with auto-lacing technology.
Meet the over-the-top First Class Shoe from Virgin America. It has all the features you’d expect from a first-class seat on a Virgin plane and none of the things you want in a functional footwear: a tiny display for watching movies; a USB port for charging; a WiFi hotspot; LED mood lighting; Italian leather; and a working airplane seat buckle.
The futuristic sneaker was made in collaboration with advertising agency Eleven Inc. and design company SearchnDesign, and it’s the latest in a series of publicity stunts meant to get the attention of Virgin America fliers who, according to Eleven’s chief creative officer Mike McKay, are “almost impossible to reach with traditional advertising.”
These kicks have all the features you’d expect from a first-class seat on a Virgin plane and none of the things you want in a functional footwear.
Like a first-class plane ticket, the shoe won’t come cheap. There’s only one pair in existence, and it’s currently being auctioned on eBay to raise money for charity. If you want to bid on it, you have until October 23. You’d better be willing to cough up some serious cash, though; we’re just a couple of days into the auction, but the pair has already fetched an $8,700 bid as of this writing.
