Xiaomi’s Android One-powered Mi A1 owns a purely stock version of Android, but it’s been stuck on version 7.1 Nougat since its launch. Users of the midrange handset will soon get a taste of 8.0 Oreo, but it’s going to take some work.

The software specialist turned smartphone manufacturer has started looking for beta testers through the official MIUI forum. There are numerous requirements in place before you can be accepted into the program, but the good news is it’s available to users from all regions.

You must apply by 11:59PM on December 11 (Beijing time, GMT+8), and then wait for a message from Xiaomi informing you if you were accepted.

The catch here is this isn’t a stable version of Oreo that you’d be able to download. There’s even a warning stating: “please expect bugs with the ROM and think twice before you apply for it.”

Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that the final build will be available anytime soon, which is sad since part of the promise of Android One are timely software updates. The higher-end Pixel series is already seeing beta builds of 8.1 Oreo, making the Mi A1 feel prehistoric in comparison.
