Phantom Blade Zero | Year of the Snake trailer

After being showcased during a PlayStation State of Play, we’re now finally getting more details about Action RPG Phantom Blade Zero. In a Year of the Snake trailer, the game from Chinese publisher S-Game showcased a new boss fight, gameplay mechanics, and some snake-themed weapons.

Vs the Seven Judgments

Phantom Blade Zero

A big chunk of the trailer focused on the main character, Soul, squaring off against the Seven Judgments who fight in a “sword formation”. Not too long after fighting in formation, you’ll notice that one of the seven differs from the rest. That one functions as the “heart” and coordinates the overall formation. When the Seven Judgments appear, they surround Soul in the positions of the Big Dipper constellation; the leader takes the key position.

Players must simultaneously handle multiple enemies while looking for opportunities to attack Decree, the heart of the formation.

The player must defeat Decree to complete this phase.

hen Decree takes damage, the other disciples will sacrifice their own health to heal him. If there are fewer than three disciples left, Decree will use his health to revive them. The collective health pool of all these enemies stays the same, meaning Soul must whittle them down one way or another.

The disciples are powered by a group AI. They coordinate attacks and launch multi-directional strikes.

Phase 2

After the first phase, three disciples ascend platforms and use red threads to manipulate a puppet, “Tyrannical Decree”, to attack Soul.

The enemies utilize a large range of motion, swinging across the arena with pendulum-like movements guided by the red threads. Their attack patterns are completely different from the previous ground battle. It requires precise timing for counterattacks. Chasing them recklessly may disrupt your rhythm and result in ineffective attacks.

Snake-Themed Weapons

White Python and Red Viper

A pair of swords of different lengths. The White Python is a long sword with wide, sweeping attacks. Meanwhile, the Red Viper is a short sword designed for precision strikes. The two swords can also be used in combination.

Gameplay:

  • A dual-wield weapon with one long and one short sword.
  • Emphasizes multi-hit combos with alternating attacks controlled by □ (short sword) and △ (long sword).
  • Offers fluid combos and visually impressive moves, such as launching the short sword with the long sword.
  • Excels in speed and quick transitions between offense and defense.

Venomous Softblade

Screenshot

A flexible sword that excels in countering and deflecting attacks. The soft blade’s flexibility allows it to wrap around joints, severing tendons and vessels.

Gameplay:

  • Focuses on defensive maneuvers and counterattacks.
  • Features unique blocking mechanics: hold L1 to block and press △ at the right moment to perform a perfect parry.
  • Follow through with ripostes after a successful parry to massively cut down the target’s Sha-Chi gauge and shatter their defense.

New Phantom Edges

Savage Axe

  • Charges for three powerful strikes, dealing heavy Sha-Chi damage to enemies.
  • The charging process is slow and can be interrupted. That means timing is crucial.
  • Three quick taps on R2 launches the same 3-combo attack without charging, but consumes more Sha-Chi.

Ink Cut

  • Combo-oriented artifact. Its attacks can be chained together with Soul’s primary weapon hits to expand the overall combo.
  • Serves as a key plot device and delivers unique effects in specific battles. (Don’t want to spoil the fun yet.)

Phantom Blade Zero will be playable on the PS5 and PC. The release date has yet to be announced.

Valve unveils price of the Steam Frame

The VR headset starts at US$ 1,059.

Published

on

The trifecta is complete. Almost a year after announcing their new hardware, Valve has finally unveiled the price tag of the Steam Frame, complementing the Steam Machine and Steam Controller revealed a few months ago.

Whereas the Steam Machine is a console of its own, the Steam Frame is a traditional VR headset with a pair of controllers for both hands. Unfortunately, despite being in a different segment, the headset is not immune to the rising prices of technology. The Steam Frame will start at US$ 1,059 for a 256GB model and can go up to US$ 1,299 for the 1TB model. On the plus side, each box will come Half-Life: Alyx packaged along with the headset.

Here’s a more detailed rundown of what you’re getting. The Steam Frame will ship with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, paired with 16GB of RAM. Each eye comes with a 2160 x 2160 LCD screen, putting out images at up t0 a 144Hz experimental refresh rate. As mentioned above, the headset will start with 256GB of storage but can go up to 2TB. It will come packaged with SteamOS 3 and a rechargeable 21.6Wh battery.

This might be a hard buy for some. The industry currently has more affordable options, for one. Also, virtual reality isn’t the most thriving segment of gaming today.

If you’re still decided on buying one, however, Valve is using its lottery system. Interested customers can sign up from now until September 17. The company will then randomize the purchasing order. Those who draw the first ones in the lottery can get a purchase email as soon as September 18. Meanwhile, anyone who registers after September 17 will automatically be put at the back of the queue.

Xbox saves Kojima’s PHYSINT after PlayStation drops support

PlayStation says the separation was mutual, but Kojima hints otherwise.

Published

Things aren’t going well in the PlayStation camp. After two months of frankly questionable decisions, the company adds another to the pile by dropping support for Hideo Kojima’s PHYSINT.

For a while now, Kojima and PlayStation were in a very productive relationship with the Death Stranding duology, a critically acclaimed collection of titles for the platform. When things looked like they were going well, Kojima announced PHYSINT, an espionage-themed game which reminded fans way too much of Metal Gear Solid.

If you were investing in a PlayStation 5 to play Kojima’s latest thriller, you might want to move your chips elsewhere now. PlayStation has just dropped support for the espionage game, meaning PHYSINT will no longer be a first-party title for the platform.

Though PlayStation claims that the decision came after “careful consideration,” Kojima himself has said that the move was “unexpected,” going against PlayStation’s assurance of a mutual separation.

Very quickly, Xbox has announced that their platform will support PHYSINT instead. It’s a big get for the competing brand because Xbox Game Studios is already supporting OD, Kojima’s other upcoming horror project starring Sophia Lillis.

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to say more. As is tradition, Kojima will not explain much more about his upcoming titles. In fact, OD’s trailer barely says anything. One thing’s for sure, though: we’re all in for quite a ride.
