OPPO Find N5 now official: Impossibly thin book-style foldable, AI-powered

A big upgrade

OPPO took their time releasing a follow-up to their book-style foldable and it looks like it was time well-spent. What came out after a little over a year of waiting is the OPPO Find N5. It now claims the title of the thinnest book-style foldable while also presenting itself as the device to beat in this specific category.

UPDATE: The HONOR Magic V5 has just snatched the crown of being the world’s thinnest foldable.

Glow up

Not that its predecessor, the Find N3/ OnePlus Open, looked bad, but the overall dimensions seem to be different. While the earlier iterations of the book-style Find N were short and a little stout, the Find N5 is taller, leaner, and by perhaps every other measurable, meaner.

The Find N5 is only 8.93mm thin when folded. That’s a similar measurement to any regular slab smartphone. It weighs only 229g.

With this transformation, it now looks a lot more like the many book-style foldables available in across the world now. Here it is side-by-side along those other foldables.

Durability

OPPO Find N5

The build will raise some durability issues but OPPO is quick to counter saying it is built to last. Holding the foldable together is the Titanium Flexion Hinge. The company says it’s 26% smaller yet 36% more rigid than the previous generation.

Additionally, the Find N5’s hinge cover and the wing plate that connects the hinge to the folding display are made of Grade 5 titanium alloy. These were 3D printed to achieve the correct shape. The hinge’s load-bearing components are made using Ultra-High Strength Steel (UHSS) exclusively customised by OPPO, with an industry-leading yield strength of 2000 MPa.

Larger displays

OPPO Find N5

The taller foldable means larger displays. It measures 8.12 inches when open which OPPO claims is the largest of any book-style foldable right now. When closed, it measures 6.62-inches which isn’t too far away from regular slab smartphones.

OPPO, like other book-style foldable makers, also makes a big deal about the crease. It says the Find N5 has “class-leading shallow, narrow crease.” It has also earned the first TÜV Rheinland’s Minimized Crease Certification.

The displays also feature 400PPI, 1-120Hz refresh rate, over 2000 nits peak brightness, OPPO Pen support, and low-flicker, 2160Hz PWM dimming.

Snapdragon 8 Elite

Powering the OPPO Find N5 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform — the same chip available on early 2025 flagship smartphones. That assures you of power efficient performance that can handle multitasking, gaming, and more.

It’s also AI-capable like other smartphones equipped with the same SoC. The Hexagon NPU delivers a 45% improvement in AI performance.

Hasselblad Cameras

The OPPO Find N5 sports three rear shooters:

  • 50MP Main Camera, 21mm, f/1.89, 1/1.56″, OIS
  • 50MP Telephoto Camera, 70mm, 1/2.75″, Periscope Lens, 10cm Focal Distance
  • 8MP Ultra-Wide Camera, f/2.2, 116°, 15mm, Autofocus

The Find N5 is capable of 3x optical zoom and 6x lossless zoom. Beyond that, the AI Telescope Zoom kicks in. It automatically activates at 10x zoom and beyond.

AI Telescope Zoom analyzes the image at a pixel level and uses the full 50MP resolution of the telephoto camera to restore lost details, powered by advanced AI algorithms. At 60x, when raw data from the telephoto camera is limited, Find N5 activates additional on-device AI models to further enhance image detail.

There’s the usual Hasselblad Portrait things along with a new Lightning Snap that promises to properly capture subjects in motion.

More AI photo things

OPPO’s AI Studio also comes into play offering a variety of ways to thinker with images. These are AI Clarity Enhancer, AI Unblur, AI Reflection Remover, and AI Eraser.

Battery and charging

The OPPO Find N8 is equipped with a 5600mAh battery with support for 80W SUPERVOOC Charging and 50W AIRVOOC charging. OPPO proudly claims it can last beyond a full day and can juice up pretty quickly.

Foldable things

OPPO Find N5

Just like many foldables you get the benefit of multitasking when the Find N5 is unfolded. Flex mode is also available supporting activities like translation, typing, and video viewing.

Newish this year is the O+ Connect app which is now available on Mac. It lets you remotely control the Find N5 on your MacBook.

Price and availability

The OPPO Find N5 comes in Misty White and Cosmic Black. It’s available in the 16GB RAM + 512GB ROM configuration. Price and availability will vary depending on the country/region.

In Singapore, it retails for SGD 2499 and will be available starting February  28.

Google will force Android users to use Gemini next month

Google Assistant will be retired as well.

Published

on

What is Google’s voice assistant called? Technically, there are two possible answers: Google Assistant and Gemini. Despite Google’s push for Gemini, the ubiquitous Google Assistant is still a common option for most users. However, the company will soon take that choice away as the voice assistant will retire in favor of Gemini.

First reported by 9to5Google, Google has sent emails to users, declaring that Google Assistant will no longer be an option for Android users starting September 4. On that date, the company will slowly roll out an update to get rid of the assistant’s availability on device.

Google also makes it clear that Gemini will be “the assistant experience on Android” moving forward. If you’re used to Google Assistant to help you with handsfree use, you’ll have only one option soon. This also affects other peripherals including smartwatches and audio accessories.

Of course, there are a few exceptions. Devices that can’t support an AI-powered assistant like Gemini are mercifully spared of the forced transition. Likewise, devices in countries that don’t support the AI assistant are also saved.

Despite the tepid reception of AI today, Google remains adamant about pushing Gemini to more users, regardless of whether they want it or not. In fact, a forced move like this will likely inflate the numbers that more devices are using Google’s AI software than ever before, while conveniently hiding the fact that most users never really had much of a choice.

OnePlus officially leaves the United States and Canada

The brand’s smartphones are now sold out in the United States.

Published

on

Once upon a time, OnePlus used to be the darling child of smartphone users on a budget. For a more meager price than a flagship, users can enjoy flagship specs on a uniquely designed phone. Who can forget the iconic OnePlus One?

Unfortunately, prices have a way of catching up. Though the brand’s phones are still perfectly good, more options have already emerged as alternatives for a so-called flagship killer, including OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei’s Nothing.

Now, marking the brand’s next step, whatever that is, OnePlus has officially left the North American market. As of today, the company has sold its last smartphone in the United States and Canada. Going on the official OnePlus website will warrant a Sold Out sign for both the OnePlus 15 and 15R. If anything, users can still get a handful of earbuds and cases.

As with everything that sells out, if you really want to cop one of the last remaining models in America, you can grab one off a third-party retailer, but who knows until when that will last?

This isn’t just a stocking issue, either. In July, the company already confirmed that it is pulling out of the region starting this month. It’s a sign of internal restructuring happening inside OPPO and all the brands under its umbrella. There’s also a rumor that OnePlus was relegated to being a sub-brand of OPPO once again.

Mastercard brings Apple Pay to customers in the Philippines

Easy and secure way to pay across Apple ecosystem

Published

on

Mastercard has officially brought Apple Pay to its cardholders in the Philippines. This gives iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac users an easy, secure, and private way to pay in-store, in-app, and online.

To pay in-store, customers simply double-click the side button, authenticate, and hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near a payment terminal to make a contactless payment.

Apple Pay is easy to set up. On iPhone, simply open the Wallet app and tap the ‘+’ and follow the steps to add a Mastercard credit or debit card.

Once a customer adds a card to iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac, they can start using Apple Pay on that device right away.

Every Apple Pay purchase is secure because it is authenticated with Face ID, Touch ID, or device passcode, as well as a one-time unique dynamic security code.

Apple Pay is accepted in grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, coffee shops, retail stores, and many more places that accept contactless payments.

Customers can also use Apple Pay on iPhone, iPad, and Mac to make faster and more convenient purchases in apps or on the web without having to create accounts or repeatedly type in contact information, card details, or shipping and billing information.

Of course, customers will continue to receive all of the rewards and benefits offered by Mastercard.

Security and privacy are at the core of Apple Pay. When customers use a credit or debit card with Apple Pay, the actual card numbers are not stored on the device, nor on Apple servers.

Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted, and securely stored in the Secure Element, an industry-standard, certified chip designed to store the payment information safely on the device.
