All OnePlus 8 series phones will support 5G
But, will it increase the price of the phone?
OnePlus has confirmed that its upcoming OnePlus 8 series phones will all be 5G enabled. In an interview with CNET, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau discussed some of the company’s plans for the upcoming OnePlus 8, though his main focus was on 5G connectivity.
In case you were wondering whether 5G support will make the prices of these devices shoot up, Lau has also confirmed that the new technology will add something to the cost of each device.
India is OnePlus’ focus market and it’ll take years for the country to deploy 5G at a mass scale due to an ongoing telecom debt crisis. Amid no availability of 5G, users will end up spending more for a feature that’s practically unusable. On the flip side, the company could launch a 4G-only option that’s slightly lighter on the pocket.

Vivo’s sub-brand iQoo recently launched the iQoo 3 in India and offered a special 4G-only option. Keep in mind, Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 865 chipset works only with the X55 5G modem. Hence, if any phone maker wants to use the flagship-grade processor, they’ll inherently offer 5G compatibility.
OnePlus phones are known for packing Qualcomm’s flagship chips, hence it isn’t surprising for the company to announce complete 5G availability. The company launched its first 5G phone, the OnePlus 7 Pro, in the UK as well as the US.
There have been rumors about a OnePlus 8 Lite and if it ever materializes, we expect it to have a MediaTek chipset that’s 5G compatibly, like the Dimensity 1000 SoC.
