Epic Games announces FreeFortnite tournament, takes a jibe at Apple

Prizes include non-Apple devices

Battle Royale games are a thing of the past now. Instead, we’re seeing a live battle between Fornite developer Epic Games and Apple. Taking a shot at Apple, the game developer has announced a new tournament called FreeFortnite and the winner shall get non-Apple devices as a reward.

Epic is offering in-game outfits, a physical FreeFortnite hat, Alienware gaming laptops, Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 tablets, OnePlus 8 phones, and Xbox One X and Nintendo Switch consoles. The message is clear, Epic Games is all set to take on Apple.

The FreeFortnite Cup is scheduled for August 23 where iOS users will be able to play with their friends as well as strangers across all platforms. The tournament will run for four hours where players will have to compete in up to 12 Solo matches.

The two companies are embroiled in a legal dispute right now over Fortnite’s in-app purchases. Apple policy says Epic Games is obligated to use the App Store’s checkout for in-app purchases. Recently, Fortnite bypassed Apple’s system and directly started collecting in-house purchases.

In retaliation, Apple has terminated Epic Games’ developer account. The move will not only affect Fornite but also other games that depend on the same gaming engine.

Epic Games reminded iOS players that they won’t be able to play the next season of Fortnite and also suggested they migrate to other platforms where Fortnite is available before the next season begins. The tournament will also double-up as a coordinated campaign against Apple and it’s monopolistic policies.

A Metal Gear Solid Remake might be upon us! According to several sources, it’s possible that we will be getting a full remake of the PlayStation classic for both the PS5 and PC.

YouTube creator RedGamingTech touched on this in his recent video, confirming from his numerous sources. Essentially, it suggests that the remake will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive with an available PC version.

The same YouTube creator also mentions that Metal Gear Solid 2, 3, and 4 are reportedly getting PC ports — or remasters. Whether or not all of these are true remains to be seen. But, if it is true, this will definitely bolster the amount of titles that will be available to the PS5, whether that’s upon launch or within the first year of its release.

Metal Gear Solid was first released in September 1998 for the PlayStation and PC. It’s a stealth game that follows Solid Snake — a soldier tasked to neutralize the terror threat FOXHOUND. The game was well-received by fans and critics. It sold over six million copies.

Within weeks since the price and release date reveal, people went crazy over Sony’s PlayStation 5. Apart from this, several game developers announced that they already have titles ready for the next-gen console.

Microsoft is acquiring Bethesda parent ZeniMax for $7.5 billion

Gearing up for the console war

Microsoft has announced it’ll be acquiring ZeniMax Media for US$ 7.5 billion. The gaming company is behind many high-profile titles like Doom and Fallout. Furthermore, the gaming company owns Bethesda Softworks, which owns top-sellers like The Elder Scrolls, Wolfenstein, and Dishonored.

To be more precise, the deal includes multiple divisions like Bethesda Softworks, Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, ZeniMax Online Studios, Arkane, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Studios.

The announcement comes just a week after Microsoft’s failed bid for the short-video app, TikTok. Instead, Oracle and Walmart won the race and officially became technology partners of the game. However, the gaming acquisition will immensely help the Redmond based giant sell its Xbox console.

“All of their great work will of course continue and grow and we look forward to empowering them with the resources and support of Microsoft to scale their creative visions to more players in new ways for you,” Xbox head Phil Spencer said in a blog post announcing the news.

The new Xbox and PlayStation are scheduled to come later this year and this deal gives Microsoft an edge in terms of game exclusivity. With the Coronavirus outbreak, gaming has picked up radically in 2020 and the future looks bright in the short term.

Microsoft will be seeking to bring all of the new studios’ upcoming titles to Xbox Game Pass on day one across Xbox consoles and PC.
