iPhone 5 users urged to update before November 3

Before everything gets too late

Published

Apple’s iPhone 5 may not be included in iOS 13’s list of supported devices, we know it’s still running today. If you are one among those iPhone 5 users, you are urged to update to iOS 10.3.4 before November 3 (Thursday).

This is mainly because of the GPS rollover issue that resets GPS devices after 1,024 weeks or merely 19.7 years. Although the second rollover already started last April 6, 2019, it will have an effect on the aging iPhone 5 starting on November 3, 12AM UTC.

Connect your phone to your existing Mac or PC, back it up, and hit the update button through iTunes. You can also update it wirelessly via Settings > General > Software Update. An extensive step-by-step guide by Apple can be found here.

If you fail to update your device, it’s not just GPS accuracy that’s at stake — even your App Store, iCloud backups, emails, and web browsing will not work as they rely on correct time and date to function properly. Apple has indicated a support page for all the details you are curious to find out.

Before you close this, iPhone 4s, iPads 1,2 and Mini are also required to update to iOS 9.3.6. If you forgot or declined the update, GPS accuracy is the only thing that will be affected. Anyhow, it’s still best to keep old devices updated while they can.

Redmi K30 could have a 120Hz display, 60MP camera

Another premium offering is on its way

The rumor mills are overclocking and suggest Redmi could have a surprise for all of us. At the Xiaomi Developer Conference (MIDC), Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun confirmed that the Redmi K30 5G will launch in December.

According to strings in MIUI 11’s code, Redmi K30 will reportedly feature a 120Hz display, a feature that has been limited to flagship phones for now. XDA-Developers has spotted the mention in MIUI 11 nightly builds of an upcoming Xiaomi smartphone codenamed “Phoenix”, which is tipped to debut as the Redmi K30.

The code also suggests it’ll have a dual-camera punch-hole cutout and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. The final major feature spotted was confirmation that the device supports Sony’s IMX686 camera sensor

Redmi has successfully turned itself into a separate brand this year and they’ve been experimenting with new waters. Earlier, the brand was restricted to the affordable segment and had ancillary revenue sources like ads to offer aggressive pricing.

This slightly changed with the launch of the Redmi K20 series. Targeted as a premium offering, it came with midrange specifications and a competitive price. Realme has followed the same path with its recently launched Realme X2 Pro.

Similar to the Redmi K20, the soon-to-launch Redmi K30 is also expected to be powered by Snapdragon 700 processor. Details about the beefier Redmi K30 Pro are scarce at the moment but rumors indicate it could be powered by a flagship processor.

Huawei gets some of its suppliers back

It’s finally starting

For Huawei watchers, the critical question is “when.” When will the US stop bullying China’s biggest smartphone brand? When will we see an Android-based Huawei flagship again? When will we see an end to the Chinese-American trade war?

Today, we finally get an answer to one of these questions. Particularly, the US government has started to roll out application responses to operating license requests. Since the government has announced a total ban against Huawei’s operation in the States, American companies have applied for exceptions to the rule. Besides Huawei’s continued survival, an operating license will ensure the continued business of a valued customer. Unfortunately, nothing was heard about the applications for a while.

Now, the government has finally started responding to several applications. According to reports, “roughly 300 license requests” have been processed. The figure estimates around half of the total applications received by the US government. Further, half of the responded requests are approvals.

Unfortunately, both sides remain mum regarding which companies received an approval. If anything, further reports have hinted at priority for the semiconductor industry. However, both hardware and software industries already have responses.

Neither Huawei nor Google have commented. For now, we don’t know if the approvals include the most awaited one, Google’s Android OS.

At the very least, we are finally seeing progress on Trump’s crackdown against Huawei. Additionally, the government has also granted a new three-month extension on Huawei’s operating license in the US.
