Samsung’s new Galaxy A series doesn’t feel midrange

CES 2017 hasn’t officially kicked off yet, but Samsung already revealed its latest midrange Galaxy A lineup, and it’s quite impressive.

We had a feeling it would be more flagship-like based on earlier reports, and the trio of handsets definitely deliver. The 2017 versions of the 5.7-inch Galaxy A7, 5.2-inch Galaxy A5, and 4.7-inch Galaxy A3 all have metal frames with curved glass backs and IP68-rated water and dust resistance.

Those are features formerly reserved for Samsung’s premium Galaxy S line. While Sammy hasn’t disclosed how much they’ll cost yet, we do know the new lineup will launch in Russia early this month, with other countries to follow in the coming months.

Other similarities include AMOLED panels with Samsung’s Always On feature, USB Type-C ports, and strangely enough, an aging Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system.

Aside from the dimensions, the three midranges differ in certain characteristics. For instance, only the Galaxy A7 and A5 have fast charging and 16-megapixel cameras on both sides; the Galaxy A3 settles for a 13-megapixel camera at the back and 8-megapixel selfie cam.

The two larger handsets also have faster 1.9GHz octa-core processors, as well as more memory and storage at 3GB and 32GB, respectively, as compared to the Galaxy A3’s slower 1.6GHz octa-core chip with 2GB of memory and 16GB of storage. Luckily, there’s microSD expansion for more data space.

Naturally, the Galaxy A7 has the largest battery capacity at 3600mAh, beating the Galaxy A5 and A3’s 3000mAh and 2350mAh batteries.

All three will come in black sky, gold sand, blue mist, and peach cloud colors, along with a handy fingerprint scanner in their signature home buttons.
