Sony is selling the PlayStation 5 at a loss

Confirmed by the company

Published

on

Whenever a new product launches, you can easily assume that the company expects a profit from it. However, there are times when a product just doesn’t sell well. In Sony’s case, the opposite is strangely true. Despite selling out all over the world, Sony is apparently selling the PlayStation 5 at a loss.

In Sony’s quarterly investors report, the company reported that the PlayStation 5’s current selling price is less than the cost to make the console. Meaning, no matter how many consoles that Sony pushes out the door, it can’t currently record a profit from purely console sales.

That said, Sony is still pulling in good numbers from the report. The company’s gaming arm can make profits from moving out last-minute PlayStation 4 stocks. Further, the company still sells its games under reasonable price tags.

Plus, besides the gaming branch’s success, Sony still has other branches. Notably, the company has made good strides towards other industries, including new cameras and smartphones.

Currently, the PlayStation 5 series is still operating under very limited stocks. Mainly because of bots and scalpers, most consumers haven’t been able to buy their own consoles yet. If you’re still on the lookout for new consoles, you might have to wait until June for a more regular stock, much like Microsoft’s own confirmation about the Xbox Series X.
