Twitter might sell usernames in online auctions
After a billion usernames were freed last year
For online connoisseurs, there are few things more heartbreaking than when someone already took a username you wanted to use on a platform. Following Musk’s purchase of the platform late last year, Twitter is making strides in freeing up usernames taken by inactive accounts. Now, solving two problems in one, the company is reportedly considering online auctions to sell usernames to users.
First reported by The New York Times, Twitter will reportedly allow users to bid for usernames in the future. The online auctions can potentially boost revenue for a company still struggling to boost revenue after Musk’s exorbitant purchase.
Back in December, Elon Musk announced that the platform will start freeing up 1.5 billion usernames used up by inactive accounts. Now, it looks like an online auction is the next step for the platform. That is, if Twitter pushes through with its plans to sell usernames to the highest bidder.
Since the invention of the URL, domain squatting has been a prevalent issue preventing users from taking URLs outright. Some of the more malicious types involved in this practice has domain squatters ransoming domains until others pay for their liberation back to the public. The practice is also prevalent in social media with squatters taking usernames in hopes of others paying for the right to use them. It often leads to targeted users resorting to affixing underscores or other characters to their usernames to thwart squatting efforts.
Of note, Twitter’s policies prohibit squatting on Twitter handles to sell them to others. Ironically, Twitter’s plans for an online auction might change policies for the platform but only if the selling is done officially through Twitter.
