This week, Barcelona is host to one of the most anticipated extravaganzas for technology. At MWC 2023, several smartphone brands are showcasing what’s next on their respective lineups. Not playing around, Xiaomi has unveiled its next flagship series, the Xiaomi 13 series.

Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro

Co-engineered with Leica, Xiaomi aims to bring smartphone photography to the forefront of its user experience. In particular, the Xiaomi 13 Pro carries a Leica Vario-Summicron 1.19-2.2/14-75 ASPH camera system. The co-engineered system consists of a 23mm wide-angle camera with a 1-inch IMX989 sensor, a 75mm telephoto camera, and a 14mm ultra-wide camera. For zooming, the camera features an optical zoom range going from 0.6x to 3.2x.

Bolstering the hardware, the Xiaomi 13 uses the Xiaomi Imaging Engine to enhance photos. Two photographic styles, called Leica Authentic Look and Leica Vibrant Look, offer a good blend between color accuracy and aesthetic enhancement.

Under the hood, the Xiaomi 13 series sports the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. Both models offer up to 12GB of RAM. Both will also offer 256GB of internal storage; however, the Xiaomi 13 Pro comes with a beefier 512GB variant. Out of the box, the series will come with MIUI 14 based on Android 13.

Outside, the regular model comes with a 2.5D curved back design, sporting a 6.36-inch FHD+ AMOLED display in front. Meanwhile, the pro variant comes with a 3D-curved ceramic body and a 6.73-inch 120Hz WQHD+ AMOLED display.

The Xiaomi 13 Pro has a sizable 4820mAh battery, compatible with Xiaomi 120W HyperCharge. Meanwhile, the regular version comes with a 4500mAh battery with 67W wired turbo charging.

Xiaomi 13 Lite

A more bite-sized version of the flagship series, the Xiaomi 13 Lite expands the lineup to cater to younger users. The smartphone’s triple rear camera setup consists of a 50-megapixel main sensor (with a Sony IMX766 sensor), an 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera, and a 2-megapixel macro camera.

Inside, the Lite has a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor, 8GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of internal storage. It will come with MIUI 14, based on Android 12, out of the box. It will also have a 4500mAh battery, compatible with up to 67W of wired turbo charging.

Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass

At the MWC 2023, Xiaomi revealed its cutting-edge Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition, the brand’s first device of its kind.

The Xiaomi AR Glass has a free-form optical module. It comprises a pair of MicroOLED screens, and free-form light-guiding prisms that help users see a clear picture display.

When paired with a Xiaomi 13 or other Snapdragon Spaces ready device, the lightweight glasses connect with low latency, and offer a wide range of possibilities from a retina-level adaptive display which best simulates virtual objects as if they’re just seen by the naked eye.

Gesture Control

The device also features an innovative micro-gesture interaction that enables users to utilize their inner fingers as basic keys for movement operations.

How this is done is the AR Glass detects the second joints of the hand’s middle and index fingers. Thumb-tapping is also used for text input.

In the future, Xiaomi is exploring how to take advantage of sliding and tapping motions to integrate it seamlessly as part of the glasses’ controls.

A more connected experience

Lastly, the AR Glass also supports a variety of large-screen applications, enabled by Mi Share’s app-streaming capability.

TikTok and YouTube, for instance, can optimize the display area usage of the glasses, turning them into a portable large screen which you can take anywhere with you.

Users may also transfer a stream from a television screencast and continue watching it on the glasses. Xiaomi’s integrated spatial audio also makes the listening experience part more immersive.
