Scientists: Game difficulty may soon be based on players’ emotions
A novel approach to dynamic difficulty
Soon, video game difficulty level may depend largely on the emotions of players.
As it’s pretty much natural for one to get carried away by games, Korean scientists are developing a groundbreaking model when it comes to dynamic difficulty adjustment (DDA). where the players’ emotions lead to the tweaking of the game’s difficulty.
That’s according to the paper “Diversifying dynamic difficulty adjustment agent by integrating player state models into Monte-Carlo tree search” spearheaded by scientists from the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology in Korea.
Some of you might think a sophisticated heart-rate tracking device needs to be used. That’s not exactly the case. And it’s actually simpler than that.
Adjusting difficulty according to emotion
In-game data will be used to estimate a player’s emotion. This will be carried over to the gameplay in order to maximize player satisfaction and to suit just how accurately “challenging” the game should be.
Instead of just focusing on player’s performance, they have developed DDA agents that adjust the game’s difficulty. Four different aspects related to a player’s satisfaction were considered:
- Challenge
- Competence
- Flow
- Valence
These DDA agents were trained via machine. It learns from data gathered from actual human players who played a game against various AIs. These players then answered a questionnaire about their experience.
Using an algorithm called the Monte-Carlo tree search, each DDA agent employed both actual game and simulated data to tune the AI’s fighting style in a way that maximized a specific emotion, a.k.a. the “affective state”.
Finally, through an experiment with 20 volunteers, the proposed DDA agents could produce AIs that improved the players’ overall experience. It’s a possible game-changer in the industry moving forward.
Assistant Professor Kyung-Joong Kim, who led the study, also noted that such approach may even be used in healthcare, exercise, and education in the future, “gamifying” them in the process.

“Gamescom will be an incredibly important moment for our team since this will be our first global playtest and we’re excited to see how first-time players experience our game,” said Ary Chen, Game Director and Co-CEO of Eclipse Glow Games.
“The team has poured heart, soul, and maybe even a few tears into developing the game over the last few years, and it’s finally our opportunity to share it with players. We’re looking forward to seeing their reaction.”
Members of the press and content creators can also schedule private hands-on sessions with the development team during the event.
Arthurian-inspired adventure
Tides of Annihilation blends fast-paced action with a Neo-Medieval vision of modern London. The story follows Gwendolyn after an Outworld invasion leaves the city in ruins.
Driven by a mission to save her sister, she travels between a shattered London and the mythical realm of Avalon. Along the way, she uncovers the mystery behind her newfound powers. She must also decide the fate of reality itself.
Eclipse Glow Games is developing Tides of Annihilation for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
