Netflix anime adaptation of Ōoku: The Inner Chambers coming in May
More titles announced
Netflix unveiled its upcoming slate of titles at AnimeJapan 2023, which includes PLUTO, Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune¸ and the anime adaptation of Fumi Yoshinaga’s Ōoku: The Inner Chambers.
The manga PLUTO is based on Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy “The Greatest Robot on Earth” arc from 1964.
The award-winning masterpiece is a suspenseful drama set in the future, where humans and high-functioning robots live in harmony.
Coming in May 2023, Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune is an animated series adapted from Carlo Zen’s military science fiction novel. Here, Akira Ihotsu is a young man who spends his days rebelling against an oppressive society set in future Earth.
He will be joined by misfits from several other nations to make a stand against the Pan-Star System Trade Federation.
Inspired by the historic women’s quarters of the Edo Castle, Ōoku: The Inner Chambers, meanwhile, is a tale where gender roles have been reversed.
A mysterious plague has caused a rapid decline in the male population, leading to women taking roles of authority in the Edo society.
Curiously, women took the names of men when succeeding the family line, something Yoshimune tries to unravel as looks at the history of the inner chambers.
