This Indian-language character can crash your iPhone

Apple just can’t catch a break. Months after a brouhaha with their batteries, they are once again at the forefront of another slip-up — a bug that can crash all your messaging services (and your phone).

Found only today, the new bug triggers whenever your iPhone receives a message that contains a specific character (pictured but not typed below) from the Indian language Telugu. Once displayed, the character crashes the app that it’s currently on. This includes popular messaging apps Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, and Twitter. Infected apps will still crash every time you open them.

If you think it doesn’t get worse than that, think again. If the character pops up as a notification, the entire iOS Springboard crashes. After which, the only recourse is to hope and pray that it boots up again. Reports indicate that forced restarts of an iPhone with a crashed Springboard will result in a bootloop.

The bug also affects watchOS and macOS. However, the Apple-wide bug is absent from iOS 11.3 beta. It’s a sign that a patch is already in the works. We just don’t know when it lands as a public release.

Telugu is an Indian language spoken by almost 85 million people. While this is only a portion of the Indian population (much less, the world), anyone can use the Telugu character for malicious purposes.
