A BlackBerry phone with a physical keyboard is coming in 2021

BlackBerry is an iconic phone brand that dominated the market a decade ago. Unfortunately, it couldn’t keep up with the smartphone race and slowly faded away. The company now focuses on enterprise solutions while the brand is now licensed out for smartphone production.

In 2016, TCL was one of the licensees and launched a plethora of phones like KEYone, KEY2, and KEY2 LE. Regional partners also launched a couple of models. Recently, TCL’s agreement came to an end, making room for a new partner to get on board.

Now, OnwardMobility has announced a licensing deal with BlackBerry and shall be launching branded phones in tandem with Foxconn subsidiary FIH Mobile. OnwardMobility has the right to develop, engineer, and produce next-generation BlackBerry-branded phones.

The next phone is confirmed to have a physical keyboard and 5G connectivity. BlackBerry phones are infamous for their keyboard and there’s a niche market of users out there who prefer a physical keyboard in an all-touch era.

All previous phones by TCL have been limited to the midrange segment. There hasn’t been any flagship phone in the works for the last few years and the probability of the next one being midrange is high.

CEO of OnwardMobility, Peter Franklin said, “Enterprise professionals are eager for secure 5G devices that enable productivity, without sacrificing the user experience. BlackBerry smartphones are known for protecting communications, privacy, and data.”

Canadian technology company BlackBerry is known for its security solutions. The brand is synonymous with protection and governments around the world rely on BlackBerry software as well as hardware for secure communications.
