Android P could have iPhone X’s navigation gestures

The Android P preview we witnessed last month was bare — and we mean bare. With the exception of a few screenshots revealing a new quick settings menu and another approach to notifications, there wasn’t much to speculate about. Fortunately for us, a new leak reveals something fresh for the traditional Android navigation bar.

Caught by 9to5Google, the Android Developers Blog accidentally posted a screenshot showing what could be the next iteration of Android’s primary home-back-apps control on Android P.

While the back button is still there, the home icon is now pill-shaped. There’s also no sign of the recent apps button as of the moment.

According to the same sources, the back icon will disappear when not needed, and multitasking might be handled purely by gesture instead of the usual right-most button.

This hints that Android P may be immitating some tricks from the iPhone X’s style of gesture navigation. It would make sense and may be for the better, since practically every smartphone is heading towards the notched and truly borderless aesthetic. Eliminating some legacy buttons would clear out more space for on-screen content.

It’ll still take a while before we know for sure. Heck, we’re still trying to guess Android P’s dessert name.
