Gionee launches M2017, loses its mind

Gionee M2017

Despite the numerous leaks and teasers, we never would have expected Gionee to go this far with the M2017.

All the specs and features we wrote about two weeks ago are still here, from the pleasantly curved 5.7-inch Quad HD display and massive 7000mAh battery capacity (two 3500mAh batteries combined), to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 processor with 6GB of memory and up to 256GB of non-expandable storage.

In addition to the pair of 13- and 12-megapixel cameras at the back, there’s also an 8-megapixel selfie shooter in front. The only things we got wrong were the thickness and weight; the actual numbers are 10.78mm and 238g, respectively — still overly large.

But what really grabs attention is the price: It starts at an outrageous CNY 6,999 or a little over $1,000! That’s out of this world for a smartphone that can’t even outperform a OnePlus 3T, which is less than half the price.

And that isn’t even the worst part. The Italian custom alligator leather back variant retails for CNY 16,999 — that equates to roughly $2,445. Had enough yet?Gionee M2017

Fortunately, the M2017 will only be available in China, so the number of alligators that’ll be sacrificed for such an absurd phone will be lessened.

By the way, there’s no 3.5mm headphone port for no good reason at all. Gionee is really losing its mind.

Huawei Mate 20 X is company’s ultimate gaming smartphone

It’s absolutely huge!

Out of nowhere, Huawei introduced yet another member to the Mate 20 family: the Mate 20 X.

It joins the regular Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, and Porsche Design Mate 20 Pro. While each of those have their own specialties, the Mate 20 X is simply Huawei’s ultimate gaming smartphone.

If you recall, this was the gaming phone Huawei teased earlier this year, alongside the foldable smartphone that everyone is so excited to see.

Even though it has the same Kirin 980 chipset and camera setup as its siblings, the Mate 20 X sets itself apart with a much larger 7.2-inch OLED display and massive 5000mAh battery.

And since this is a gamer-centric device, an optimized cooling system is in place to prevent overheating while pushing pixels at fast frame rates. However, what’s more interesting is the compatibility with Huawei’s new M-Pen, which is a direct answer to Samsung’s Galaxy Note series.

The Mate 20 X will retail for EUR 899 for the 6GB+128GB variant beginning on October 26. Midnight Blue and Phantom Silver are the two available colors.

Porsche Design Huawei Mate 20 RS has all the tech plus luxury

Design meets technology

Like before, the Mate series from Huawei will not be complete without a Porsche Design variant. Along with the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro, the Chinese company also announced the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 20 RS. The name is a mouthful and so are all of its features.

The Porsche Design Mate 20 RS is based on the Mate 20 Pro and they share a number of features. It also sports a curved OLED display, 3D face unlock, and in-screen fingerprint sensor.

It’s powered by the new Kirin 980 processor and has all the AI capabilities that the chipset can offer. It features Dual-NPU and the latest 7nm process. The phone is paired with 8GB of memory to ensure smooth multitasking and runs Android 9 Pie with EMUI 9.0 out of the box.

Camera-wise, it sports the all-new Leica triple-camera system with a 40-megapixel main camera, 20-megapixel ultra-wide angle shooter, and an 8-megapixel telephoto cam. It can also do macro shots with ultra-sharp focus.

There’s a large 4200mAh battery inside as well and it’s fully capable of the 40W SuperCharge technology from Huawei. Fast wireless charging is also available, including the nifty reverse wireless charging.

What sets the Porsche Design variant apart from the regular Mate 20 phones is the design. Instead of a glass back, it has leather trimming. Of course, it comes preloaded with Porsche Design exclusives including icons, wallpapers, and matching user interface.

Being a luxury phone, the Porsche Design variant of the Mate 20 will not be cheap. The phone is priced at EUR 1,695 for the 256GB storage model, while the 512GB model will be available for EUR 2,095. It’s coming in Black in select markets and in a limited edition Red in China.

Alongside the highly anticipated Huawei Mate 20 launch in London, Huawei also announced two wearables.

The first announcement came in the form of a classic-looking watch, and a good-looking one at that. The Huawei Watch GT features a stainless steel case with a ceramic bezel and a diamond-like coating. It’s fitted with a 1.39-inch AMOLED display which will show you your notifications with a bright and crisp screen.

To make sure the wearable is optimized, it has a dual-chip setup which uses AI to intelligently manage whether it should use the low-speed chipset or high-speed chipset (for more intensive use) vis-a-vis the actual scenario. The Huawei Watch GT also boasts of more accurate heart rate tracking with TruSeen 3.0 Heart Rate Monitoring Technology and more accurate GPS.

Of course, it will also track activities like running, swimming, or cycling with its Multiple Sport Modes. There’s even a built-in health assistant which tracks sleep and offers relaxation features. Depending on use, the Huawei Watch GT has a battery life that will last from 22 hours with intensive use, to two weeks with normal use, to an amazing 30 days with light use. Did I mention they’re also waterproof?

There are two versions available, the Huawei Watch GT Sport which retails for EUR 199, and the Huawei GT Classic which is priced at EUR 249.

The Huawei Band 3 Pro was also unveiled. The update to the Chinese company’s simpler health tracker has a 0.95-inch HD AMOLED color display with touchscreen capabilities.
