Google has applied for a license to work with Huawei

Will the US provide some relief?

Published

Vice-president of Android and Google Play, Sameer Samat, has confirmed to Finanzen that Google is still keen on working with Huawei. The American search engine giant has reportedly applied for a license to transact with the Chinese phone maker.

American companies who want to trade with Huawei can apply for a license from the White House. Microsoft is one such company to have received approval, potentially letting Huawei use Windows OS or shipping Office products.

Thanks to the ongoing ban, Huawei can no longer use Google’s commercial products like Google Mobile Services, a suite of apps that are now considered the backbone of Android. Instead, Huawei has to rely on native solutions like Huawei Mobile Services to bridge the gap.

If the White House approves, Huawei can again start shipping phones with Google apps. Currently, its latest phones like the Mate 30 Pro do not ship with Google apps. Huawei CEO Richard Yu has previously said that the company will instantly roll-out Google apps to affected phones if they get approval.

We don’t know when the final decision will come through. On the side, Huawei isn’t taking any chances though. The company was quick to announce that it’s working on a homegrown operating system called Harmony OS. In case the American ban continues, the brand is ramping up alternative solutions.

AppGallery is Huawei’s version of the Google Play Store and a plethora of other apps have been built. Even Huawei CEO Richard Yu believes that most-used apps like Facebook and Twitter could be making their way to AppGallery soon. Amid political tensions and a ravaging trade war, it’s impossible to predict the outcome.

CES 2021 will still push through with an in-person event

Will implement a lot of safety measures

So far, CES 2020 is the only massive tech trade show to escape the ongoing coronavirus pandemic unscathed. Soon after the first show of the year, other similar events — like MWC 2020 — started dropping out for fear of spreading the virus further. Some migrated to online avenues. Some are still pushing through but with severely limited attendance.

With more than half a year to go before the next event, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) has announced that CES 2021 will continue its years-long tradition of holding an in-person event for the trade showcase. Besides the in-person event, CES 2021 will also branch out into more digital spaces, allowing more livestreaming to broadcast the latest technologies for a wider reach. Though the announcement is only making the rounds now (via The Verge), the CTA has already made and publicized the decision on May 7 through the convention’s website.

This is, of course, a huge deal for the public events industry all over the world. All eyes are on CES 2021 as a safety barometer for the future of public spaces. Though some events are still continuing as normal this year, CES 2021 will likely usher in a new era with new health tools, the “new normal,” and, hopefully, a cure. Who knows what will happen at that point in time?

CES 2021 will still implement public health measure to limit the spread of disease during the show. The CTA is already pondering on various methods like social distancing, temperature scans, mask wearing, contactless payments, and sanitization stations.

Amidst all the potential safety measures in place, we’re seeing the “new normal” in action. For sure, CES 2021 will showcase huge breakthroughs in the tech industry, as it did this year. The annual event will take place from January 6 to 9 next year.

Nickelodeon is serving up a new mobile game for us: Nickelodeon Pixel Town. A mobile game we can all sink our teeth into as we try to cope with everything that 2020 has been throwing at us so far.
So, what is it exactly? Nickelodeon Pixel Town is a city building game. The name of the game is building your own Nickelodeon city where you can collect characters, costumes, iconic buildings, and items from different Nickelodeon series. The most charming bit? It’s all drawn in highly stylistic retro pixel art.

For your city inhabitants, you get to collect characters from SpongeBob SquarePants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Invader Zim, CatDog, The Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom, Rugrats, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Avatar: The Legend of Korra, Rocko’s Modern Life, Hey Arnold! and The Wild Thornberrys.

Honestly, if you don’t have a Switch and have been gritting your teeth through the lockdown while people have been playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons, this is a decent mobile game to bring back some nostalgia. Because with all the hellish news lately, don’t we all just want to curl up into a ball and go back to a time when times seemed so much simpler? Not any better of a place and time perse, sure. But, just a time when we were too young to know any better.

Want to give this game a go?

Nickelodeon has an official launch celebration for the Pixel Town.  You can use the code PIXELTOWNHL to redeem 500 Gems for free! To redeem it, you can go to their website, click redemption, and fill up the necessary info.

If you want to build up a reason to disconnect and play like me, you can. The freebies are valid until 30 June 2020, 11:59PM (GMT+8). That’s a pretty good amount of time to be rally up enough pent up emotions to need some time away to hop back fiercer.
