Is Xiaomi officially setting up shop in the Philippines?

Getting the facts straight

Published

One look at Xiaomi’s Philippine website, and you’ll see just how long they’ve been absent from the country. The product portfolio still displays the aging Mi 4i, Mi Pad, and Redmi 2 from 2015.

For years there have been rumors of Xiaomi coming back to the Philippines with official retail stores and service centers, but nothing has materialized.

Then this photo was published on Facebook by a page called Mi Philippines:

The Facebook post claims, the country’s “first ever Authorized Mi Store” will open in TriNoma Mall, Quezon City on February 17, 2018. Pre-registrations are open for those who’d like to win a Mi A1 on opening day.

But how legit is this physical store? A reliable source tells GadgetMatch that the soon-to-launch store will be operated by an official Xiaomi “partner” with support from Xiaomi Global, similar to what the company has done in other markets like Poland.

From the looks of it, this does not necessarily mean Xiaomi is resuming full operations in the Philippines just yet.

Regardless, it is good news for Filipino Mi fans who have been denied access to Xiaomi’s many stellar offerings including GadgetMatch’s Best Budget Smartphone of 2017, the Mi A1.

We’ll find out more details as the big day draws closer.
