NVIDIA is launching the RTX 40 series for laptops

Starting in February

Even today, grabbing one of the newest GPUs is a hassle, owing to either a lack of stock or exorbitant prices. If getting new hardware is still a problem for you, there is still one option to enjoy the latest in graphics performance. Starting in February, NVIDIA is launching the GeForce RTX 40 series for laptops.

Of course, laptop versions are not the same. The smaller models are notably a notch lower than the performance of their desktop cousins. However, if you’re looking for a notebook capable of playing modern games, NVIDIA’s laptop lineup is your best bet.

Today, you can easily grab any of the GeForce RTX 30 series from most of the top notebook brands. Starting next month, you will start seeing the next generation come to the notebook market. The series will include the leading GeForce RTX 4090 all the way down to the GeForce RTX 4050.

With the latest series, NVIDIA isn’t messing around. According to the company’s estimates, notebooks with the GeForce RTX 4090 can run Cyberpunk 2077 around four times better than the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. It can also run the new Portal with RTX enabled by up to three times better.

While the RTX 40 GPUs will certainly come to most notebook brands these days, NVIDIA has specifically named the usual suspects — including Alienware, Acer, Lenovo, MSI, Razer, and Samsung — as the first brands to get the new releases. Just expect to pay a lot, as is standard with gaming notebooks.

There’s been much ado about the NVIDIA RTX Spark. By now, you’ve probably heard a lot about the upcoming reinvention of PCs. And all of them are coming out in the fall.

Unfortunately, none of these brands could share comprehensive details about their laptops beyond a promise for raw power. All of these models aren’t the final version yet.

However, just from what we can tell, these notebooks do feel different from the standard fare of laptops today. For one, they are deceptively heavier. Though all of the OEMs promise a much thinner profile, they’re either packing a lot of tech inside or are using denser materials for their chassis. But again, these are engineering units, so who knows how heavy these things will actually be?

Secondly, based on NVIDIA’s demos, they can do a lot of heavy lifting. NVIDIA says that these superchips are meant for developers and creators, but gamers will also find joy in their performance. DLSS 4.5, in particular, feels like a true revolution in terms of graphics.

Thankfully, fall isn’t too far away. If you can wait, the next evolution of PCs is just around the corner.
