Gaming is for everyone. While most gaming consoles and controllers are ergonomic today, companies are also creating ways for disabled gamers with specific limitations to play alongside others. During their CES 2023 presentation, Sony becomes the latest to promote accessibility with a customizable controller.
Unlike the regular controller form factor, Project Leonardo, as the controller is called, is circular and completely customizable. Designed to appeal to limited ranges of motion, the controller kit will include different buttons of different sizes, depending on a player’s needs.
Users can also manually map controls to support any of the PlayStation 5’s inputs. Buttons can also have two different inputs in the same button. For example, a single button can act as an L2 + R2 button, a common combination in games today. Additionally, the system can pair together with a regular DualShock 5 controller to enable another person to play along with Project Leonardo users.
It will have audio ports for audio accessibility. For use, players can lay it on top of a flat surface like a table or a wheelchair tray. Users can also mount the device on a tripod to maximize comfort.
Sony has not announced when the system will be available. Project Leonardo is still in development to ensure the best experience for all disable gamers.
