Twitter isn’t sure how to remove inactive accounts

Should inactive accounts be forced out?

Published

on

Yesterday, Twitter announced it will clear out inactive accounts, freeing up dormant usernames and reducing the risk of old accounts being hacked. The platform has been operational for more than a decade and a lot of usernames or handles were registered years back, but are no longer active.

In a statement, Twitter said: “As part of our commitment to serve the public conversation, we’re working to clean up inactive accounts to present more accurate, credible information people can trust across Twitter.

Twitter had begun contacting users who hadn’t logged in in the past six months, warning them that they would have their accounts deleted unless they signed in and agreed to the firm’s latest privacy policy.

However, the company said later that it’s keeping the crackdown on hold. Twitter was criticized for the way it has handled the announcement, with many concerned that the accounts of people who have died over the past decade will be removed with no way of saving their Twitter legacies.

The only exception will be for users in the European Union because Twitter has to comply with GDPR, a privacy law governing the region.

The push against inactive users highlights a broader effort to tidy up the platform. Old accounts are vulnerable to hacking and are often used for spreading fake news. Governing bodies around the world have asked the platform to be more proactive in countering the spread of misleading information.

Apple Music is getting a Liquid Glass makeover

The new logo debuts next week with iOS 27.2.

Apple Music is getting a revamp. In one of the tamer things going on with the brand today, Apple has introduced a new design language for its native music streaming platform.

In the midst of all the hubbub surrounding the iPhone Duo, Apple released a change in the visual identity of Apple Music. Rather than a static logo, the platform’s newest evolution offers a dynamic look that melds Liquid Glass and the power of sound together.

Confirmed through a behind-the-scenes video, Apple says that the new aesthetic was made with practical effects. Music producer Fred Again and NEST Acoustics submerged the platform’s logo in a tank of mineral oil and creating ripples with sound. The new language matches well with the chrome aesthetic typical of today’s trends and… well, Liquid Glass, of course.

Apple says that the more ripple-filled version will play before longer content like concert recordings (similar to Netflix’s startup stinger). Meanwhile, a black-and-white version will replace the app’s icon currently colored red and white. Current previews show off a simple logo, but it’s unknown whether Apple is adding a but more elements when the final version drops.

The updated version will debut for users after next week’s iOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2 updates.
