It seems like Huawei is taking a page from Xiaomi’s handbook by releasing a sub-US$ 100 smartphone of its own.

Like the Redmi 5A, the Honor Play 7 is a highly affordable handset that doesn’t really skimp on the features we value most.

It starts with the 5.45-inch 720p display that uses the newer 18:9 aspect ratio for a taller look. Inside are more modest specs, like the MediaTek MT6739 chipset, 2GB of memory, and 16GB of storage, but there’s a triple-card tray to accommodate two SIM cards and one microSD card at the same time.

More impressive is the 3020mAh battery capacity and inclusion of a 3.5mm audio jack, which is becoming increasingly rare on more expensive smartphones. A single 13-megapixel camera is on the back, while a 5-megapixel shooter handles selfies.

The only glaring omission is the fingerprint sensor, but even the Redmi 5A lacks one. Anyway, you can’t complain at this print point.

The Honor Play 7 costs only CNY 599, or nearly US$ 95. It’s currently exclusive to China in three color options: blue, gold, or black. Availability begins on May 22.
