Samsung unveils next year’s flip phone, the W2019

Has better specs than the Galaxy S9

on

While the entire town talks about Samsung’s foldable technology, the company’s flip phone is turning its gears one more time. Across the years, the niche model stayed in the sidelines, overshadowed by bigger releases. Slowly, every succeeding variant caught up to its respective year’s technology.

Dubbed the W2019, the flagship flip phone receives a much-needed upgrade for next year. As always, the new phone will sport two screens. Surprisingly, both screens will retain the same specs from last year’s model: 4.2-inch Super AMOLED displays with 1080p resolutions.

Most of the phone’s improvements stem from its hardware under the hood. Compared to last year’s Snapdragon 835 processor, the W2019 features an upgraded Snapdragon 845 processor, this year’s prominent processor. Similarly, it has 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. Last year’s launch had only 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. This year’s model is a significant upgrade, placing it well within this year’s standards.

As for other specs, the W2019’s camera also features a worthy upgrade. Compared to last year’s single rear camera, the W2019 has a dual-camera setup: a 12-megapixel sensor with f/1.5-2.4 aperture and a telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. Meanwhile, the front camera offers up an 8-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture.

For security, the W2019 comes with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. For durability, the phone powers through with anodized, diamond-cut aluminum and glass.

Unfortunately, battery remains a problem. Although upgraded, the W2019 carries a paltry 3070mAh battery. With the industry moving to 3500mAh, the W2019’s battery is a strange blast from the past.

Based on promotional photos, the Samsung W2019 will come in silver and a rose gold variant. Unfortunately, Samsung has not announced when the W2019 will launch and how much it will cost. However, if the past is any indication, this new model can capably break everyone’s bank accounts.

These space photos were taken with an iPhone 17 Pro Max

All three photos were taken with the selfie cam.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max has always been touted as the quintessential phone for creators. But what happens if that creator finds themselves on the far side of the Moon?

Last week, NASA concluded the Artemis II, the first manned mission around the far side of the Moon in this century. Naturally, the mission produced breathtaking views of both the Moon and the Earth. Though most of those photos were taken with dedicated cameras, a few of them were taken with an iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Before the mission launched into orbit, NASA confirmed that the premium iPhone model had been approved to be included in the spaceflight. Each of the four crew members were given the phones for their own photography.

All three of the photos posted here were reportedly taken with the phone’s selfie camera. That says a lot about the iPhone’s camera quality if they weren’t even taken with the powerful rear cameras.

When the mission ended last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook and marketing SVP Greg Joswiak congratulated the crew for finishing the mission and taking spectacular photos with the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Artemis II marks a special milestone for spaceflight. It’s the first time in almost 25 years that humans have gone to the Moon. NASA, as well as other agencies all over the world, are planning more manned spaceflights in the coming future.
