Developing markets — like India — have undergone a tremendous change in the last few years. Before, smartphone makers focused on Western launches, leaving developing countries for later. Now, the development cycle of products has changed. Everyone is tweaking strategies to prioritize developing markets.

Obviously, these markets are reliant on budget phones. Brands like Xiaomi, Honor, and Realme have succeeded in cracking the perfect formula for better sales. This left behind incumbents like Samsung and Apple. While the South Korean giant has retaliated this year with a plethora of launches, Apple is practically left out.


Apple barely has a single-digit market share left; its latest iPhones have a considerably higher price tag. To hit back, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the brand is planning to boost its manufacturing capacity and open branded retail stores.

In April, Apple recently decreased the iPhone XR’s price by 22 percent. This has already helped in increasing sales. In China, similar reductions have yielded better sales. Further, the giant is planning a similar strategy in India.

By sourcing phones locally, Apple can evade import duty for as high as 20 percent and, in turn, sell phones for a lower price. Competing brands like Samsung have been manufacturing in India since a few years back. The localized supply has provided a massive edge in terms of pricing.

However, Cook also acknowledged that India is a challenging market in the short-term. However, Apple views it as “a very important market in the long-term.”

The brand is also working on improving its service offerings like Apple Music and App Store purchases. They recently slashed prices of Apple Music in India to compete with Spotify; it costs just INR 99 (US$ 1.4) per month.

Realme operates as an independent brand now, but when it first started last year, it was technically a sub-brand of OPPO. Since then, the Indian smartphone market has changed quite a lot. Realme has been successful in taking up a huge chunk of the market, Xiaomi is slowly inching forward, and Samsung is no longer sleeping.

In the midst of all the noise, OPPO and Vivo are treading cautiously. They’re focused on grabbing the offline market that relies on brick and mortar stores. Taking a step forward, OPPO has launched a new phone called the K3 in India, and it looks eerily similar to the Realme X. In fact, even the specs sheet is pretty much the same.


What sets it apart is that it shares the new design language OPPO’s Reno line first introduced, which OPPO said will serve as the catalyst for the company’s smartphone development for the next 10 years.

While OPPO and Realme are busy sharing resources, it’s the best time for a consumer to buy a new phone. There are simply too many options to choose from and pricing has never been this competitive.

To start with, the OPPO K3 sports a 6.5-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display that also integrates a fingerprint scanner. The phone ships with ColorOS out of the box and relies on a Snapdragon 710 chipset to chug along.

The rear has a 16-megapixel primary camera coupled with a 2-megapixel secondary lens. The front camera is housed in a pop-up sliding module and consists of a 16-megapixel lens. The software incorporates standard AI-backed scene recognition and Ultra Clear Night View 2.0 feature. Lastly, backing these internals is a 3765mAh battery with VOOC 3.0 fast charging technology.

The 6GB+128GB option is priced at INR 16,990 (US$ 245) and the 8GB+128GB variant costs 19,990 (US$ 290). It’ll be available in Aurora Blue and Jade Black from July 23 via Amazon.in and offline retail stores.

Redmi K20 series arrives in India

It’s clear by now Xiaomi will always be on a launch spree, whether it’s a smartphone or an eco-system product, nothing can stop the young juggernaut. The brand has been teasing the launch of the Redmi K20 series in India for months now and it’s finally here.

The K20 Pro and K20 have been launched in the country at a very competitive price and demand for it is already very high. Initially, Xiaomi will be shipping the device via its Alpha Sale for which registration had started a week back and more than 70,000 buyers have already registered. The Redmi K20 Pro will go on limited sale starting July 22 via Mi.com, Flipkart, and Mi Home stores.


Both phones sport a 6.4-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a screen-to-body ratio of almost 92 percent. On the front is a 20-megapixel pop-up selfie camera while the rear has a triple camera setup. It consists of a 48-megapixel lens (IMX586 on the K20 Pro and IMX 582 on K20), 13-megapixel wide-angle lens, and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom.

The camera app comes with AI-backed portrait mode, beauty enhancements, and automatic scene recognition. To protect the pop-up module from damage, the phone’s gyroscope detects falls and automatically retracts.

Powering the K20 Pro is the latest Snapdragon 855 processor and the K20 is backed by a Snapdragon 730 chip. A 4000mAh battery provides all the juice and charges via 27W SonicCharge technology. The display also houses a fingerprint scanner and there’s also support for face unlock. Lastly, the design is P2i splash proof thanks to a resistant nano-coating.

The Redmi K20 Pro is priced at INR 27,999 (US$ 406) for the 6GB+128GB variant and INR 30,999 (US$ 450) for the 8GB+256GB option.

On the other hand, the K20 is priced at INR 21,999 (US$ 320) for the 6GB+64GB option and INR 23,999 (US$ 350) for 6GB+128GB configuration. Both the phones are available in Fire and Ice colors.

Xiaomi also announced the launch of Mi Neckband Bluetooth Earphones for INR 1,599 (US$ 23) and Mi Rechargeable LED Lamp for INR 1,499 (US$ 21).
