Nintendo is releasing a Mario-themed Game & Watch

You can play the original games on an LCD

Beside the modern Switch, Nintendo has also thrived on re-releasing old devices through a wave of nostalgia. A few years ago, the company released modern versions of the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System from decades past. As expected, both consoles sold out almost immediately. Now, Nintendo is doing it once again; this time, with one of its earliest handheld consoles. This November, Nintendo is releasing a Mario-themed Game & Watch.

Yesterday, Nintendo started celebrating the 35th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. As part of the celebration, the company announced a treasure trove of Mario-themed games and goodies. Among these is the Mario-themed Game & Watch.

Instead of the original’s one-game-only system, the upcoming Game & Watch can play three games: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, and a Mario-themed Game & Watch: Ball. Also, instead of the traditional graphics, the re-released version will sport a full-color LCD screen. It will have an 8-hour battery life.

True to its name, the new Game & Watch can act as a house clock. The clock function will come in an interactive Mario theme. You can still fiddle around with the console under the time-telling mode. Nintendo promises 35 Easter eggs inside the mode.

Nintendo will start selling the Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. starting in November for US$ 49.99. Like the re-released old consoles, the company will sell only a limited number of consoles.

Besides the new console, Nintendo has also announced Mario-themed remasters including Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and Super Mario Bros. 35.

Pokémon Go creator is launching an NBA game

Hoop all over the world

When it first released, Pokémon Go got everyone to go out and take walks. Naturally, the pandemic halted outdoor walks in the interest of safety. As the world slowly moves back into normalcy, Niantic, the game’s developer, wants to take players outdoors once again. This time, the developer is trading the Pokémon franchise for another equally popular one, the NBA.

Niantic has officially announced that it is developing a new AR game based on the basketball lifestyle. NBA All World is exactly how you’d imagine a basketball game would play if you took it out on the streets.

Players will duke it out against other players and real-world NBA players (controlled by the AI). The game will essentially turn the entire world into a basketball-themed playground where everyone can collect new gear, power-ups, and players. Imagine a larger version of the in-game lobby in 2K’s MyCareer mode.

Much like Niantic’s other games, players can dominate and own courts all over the world — like Pokémon Go’s gyms. Mechanics will also use the studio’s swiping gameplay. Further, in terms of location-based gameplay, players can access an NBA player’s story in their hometowns.

Unfortunately, Niantic did not show a lot of the upcoming game yet. However, we’re not in for a long wait. The developer expects that the new game will come out in time for the next NBA season.
