Pornhub is really interested in buying Tumblr

Back in December, Tumblr relinquished its biggest asset against today’s cutthroat online landscape: adult content. Even today, porn is still the most profitable industry online. Before the ban, Tumblr was one of the last bastions for porn on social media. Tumblr’s decision was quite the surprise.

From a business perspective, Tumblr’s ban came from outside pressure. App stores banned the platform for being too risqué. At the expense of its fans, Tumblr made the crucial decision.

As expected, the ban drew a lot of ire. According to Statista, Tumblr’s usage rate collapsed after the ban. From 521 million unique visits in December 2018, Tumblr drew in only 437 million unique visits in January 2019. Tumblr’s decision was a failure.

Now, the inevitable has arrived. According to The Wall Street Journal, Verizon — Tumblr’s current caretakers — are looking to sell the microblogging platform. Currently, the American telco is still looking for a potential buyer. If found, the buyer will become Tumblr’s third parent company in just six years. In 2013, Yahoo bought the fledgling Tumblr. In 2017, Verizon bought the company from Yahoo.

While talks haven’t officially started, a potential buyer has already made its intentions known. In a statement to BuzzFeed News, Pornhub VP Corey Price expressed his company’s interests in a sale.

“We’ve long been dismayed that such measures were taken to eradicate erotic communities on the platform, leaving many individuals without an asylum through which they could comfortable peruse adult content,” Price said. However, he didn’t confirm any official offer yet.

If anything, Pornhub’s interest speaks volumes about Tumblr’s future. Everyone wants the NSFW revival.
