Superman sequel, titled Man of Tomorrow, comes out in 2027

Looks like Lex Luthor is coming back

Superman was a pleasant surprise this year. It’s difficult to doubt James Gunn’s directing prowess, but the film still managed to beat expectations. Now, without skipping a beat, Gunn has just announced the film’s sequel, Man of Tomorrow, is coming to theaters in 2027.

Besides going up against Marvel’s Fantastic Four, Superman faced the tougher burden of restarting DC’s cinematic universe. The film not only accomplished that but also created a memorable story about the caped superhero. It was fun, serious, and topical. Most importantly, it drummed up hype about the next movies in the DC Universe.

Today, James Gunn, via his Instagram page, announced that the awaited follow-up to Superman is coming out on July 9, 2027 — almost exactly two years after Superman’s premiere. It will be titled Man of Tomorrow.

Gunn has not announced details about the plot yet. However, the announcement did come with custom art created by Jim Lee. It shows the titular superhero seemingly leaning on Lex Luthor in a Warsuit as if they’re buddies.

Obviously, take the photo with a grain of salt, but it looks like the franchise is sticking with Luthor as a recurring villain. However, it’s also notable that Superman and Lex Luthor are acting friendlier to each other in this graphic. Could the sequel also mean a potential team-up between the rivals to fight a common foe?

Before we get answers to these questions, the DC Universe has a couple of films to keep the hype going. Next year, the franchise will see the premiere of Supergirl (which originally had Woman of Tomorrow as a subtitle) and Clayface.
