LG will produce the next iPhone X’s screen

Toning down from the Samsung monopoly

Published

on

For staunch Android defenders, the classic argument against Apple always revolves around the latter’s reliance on parts from other manufacturers. Classically, Apple has sourced the iPhone’s parts (particularly, the screen) from Samsung.

With a new plan, Apple is hoping to reduce the pressure by introducing new suppliers for their phones. Instead of relying exclusively on Samsung, Apple might now also source their screens from LG Electronics.

Previously, Apple inked a deal with Samsung. The deal stipulated that the latter will produce around 100 million OLED screens for the iPhone X’s production.

Sadly, the deal created a monopoly that basically gave Samsung a blank check to write on.

To add to that, iPhone X sales disappointed Apple. While they did well grossly, they failed to meet Apple’s expectations. With this in mind, Samsung has also cut their own supply numbers.

Adding LG as a supplier will help Apple reduce costs and ensure faster delivery. According to a Bloomberg, the newly inked (but unannounced) deal will start with an initial run of 2 million to 4 million screens. Afterwards, LG and Apple will increase production depending on the demand.

Notably, however, LG’s screens (especially, the V30) have usually paled in comparison to Samsung’s own OLEDs. Whether the new deal will reduce the iPhone’s quality is still up for debate.

Regardless, the new deal will likely take into effect starting this year. Currently, Apple will reportedly launch three new iPhones this year — two of which will carry OLED screens.

The iPhone 18 might sell out for an unexpected reason

The ongoing shortage might play a part in the phone selling out earlier than expected.

Published

on

An iPhone selling out is not news. Because of how popular the phones are, it’s within the realm of probability that Apple runs out of stock at some point. According to a new report, this year won’t be any different… but it’s for an entirely different reason.

First reported by analyst Tim Culpan, Apple is reportedly struggling to meet its demand for semiconductors for the iPhone 18 and the foldable iPhone. The ongoing memory shortage is cutting off Apple’s ability to deliver the required supply of smartphones in a timely fashion. The report even claims that TSMC, which helps produce the iPhone, is sitting on a shipment of processors, worth US$ 1 billion, that don’t have memory chips.

Now, Apple is still confident that it can weather the launch. However, if the shortage persists, the iPhone 18 generation will likely sell out much more quickly than expected.

It’s an interesting time for Apple to experience such a shortage. It’s been heavily rumored that the company will launch its very first foldable phone next month, creating a new market for the brand. Apple definitely wants this attempt to succeed after the tepid response to its last new product, the Vision Pro.
