Alienware launches a trio of ultra-powerful gaming laptops

Slimmer and more powerful

Gone are the days when laptops were abysmally poor replacements for a gaming rig. Today’s gaming laptops can stand toe-to-toe with modest PCs. Alienware, forever a household name in the gaming laptop segment, is updating its most premium devices even further. For CES 2024, the company is presenting the new m16 R2, x16 R2, and m18 R2.

Alienware m16 R2

Last year, Alienware launched the m16. This year, the brand continues its journey to improve on what already works. The new m16 R2 trims the fat from last year’s model by removing the thermal shelf. The resulting chassis is 14 percent smaller, increasing its portability for on-the-go gamers.

Despite losing a thermal shelf, Alienware focused on improving the laptop’s inner architecture. The new model improves its airflow by 43 percent. Also, by losing the shelf, the m16 R2 has a larger touchpad and keyboard. The touchpad has an RGB loop encircling it, increasing usability even in low-light conditions.

Finally, the laptop introduces a new Stealth Mode. With the simple press of a button, the laptop turns off all RGB lighting and switches performance to Quiet Mode. Turning off its lighting and reducing fan noise ensures gamers that they can use the laptop even in quiet environments.

Inside, the m16 R2 sports the Intel Core Ultra H Series processors and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs. With NVIDIA’s DLSS 3.5 AI upscaling technology and Reflex latency reduction, gamers can optimize their setup to play even the most intensive titles. It also has a large QHD+ display with 240Hz refresh rate and a 16:10 aspect ratio. The large 90Whr battery optimizes battery usage with NVIDIA Advanced Optimus and can charge to 80 percent in just 35 minutes.

Alienware x16 R2

Touted as the brand’s most premium laptop, the new x16 R2 packs in more performance with a wealth of upgrades. Armed with a slim all-metal chassis, a 100 micro-LED stadium lighting, and an RGB-illuminated touchpad, the laptop exudes performance.

Like the above model, the x16 R2 carries the newest Intel Core Ultra processors and up to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU. Altogether, the package touts 220W of power, enabling the most performance for modern gaming. The screen, likewise, boasts a 240Hz refresh rate.

Finally, the laptop comes with the fastest memory speeds for Alienware: LP-DDR5X up to 7467MT/s. For storage, the model will come with up to 8TB inside.

Alienware m18 R2

Rounding out the trio of new laptops, the m18 R2 brings out the most power from all of Alienware’s offerings. It boasts up to the latest 14th-generation Intel Core i9-14900HZ processor and up to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPU. It will also have the largest capacity for an Alienware laptop: up to 10TB of internal storage.

On the software side, the m18 R2 comes with NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 AI upscaling technology to further improve performance while balancing quality. The new AWCC 6.1 allows users to manage their laptop down to every minute detail in one convenient hub. Finally, the upgraded FHD webcam and AI-powered far-field microphones ensures crisp quality for Discord calls and the occasional meeting between gaming sessions.

Price and availability

Both the m16 R2 and the m18 R2 will launch on January 11. The m16 R2 will start at US$ 1,649.99 (with an entry-level model starting at US$ 1,499 coming soon). Meanwhile, the m18 R2 starts at US$ 1,899.99.

The x16 R2 will launch soon and will start at US$ 2,099.99.
