Yes, you can watch ‘Friends: The Reunion’ here in the Philippines!

Legally, of course.

It’s finally happening. After years of speculation, rumors, and begging fans, Friends: The Reunion is a go. For real and in two days. It will start streaming online on May 27 but can Filipino fans catch the show?

The show that launched the careers of Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and Matthew Perry will be bringing the five iconic characters together for an unscripted reunion. They’ll be returning to Stage 24, the original soundstage inside the Warner Bros. Studio. The place where they filmed 10 seasons for the iconic show.

James Corden will also be having a sit-down with the cast where he will get to hear the cast’s opinion on certain things about the show. Were Rachel and Ross really on a break?

Not only that, but special guests are also expected. The list is pretty star-studded and it includes David Beckham, Justin Bieber, BTS, James Corden, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga, Elliott Gould, Kit Harington, Larry Hankin, Mindy Kaling, Thomas Lennon, Christina Pickles, Tom Selleck, James Michael Tyler, Maggie Wheeler, Reese Witherspoon and Malala Yousafzai.

So how do you watch it?

The reunion special is airing in the US on May 27, 2021, and can be streamed via HBO Max. Seeing as HBO Max is yet to be made available in the Philippines, Filipino fans were understandably worried that they won’t be able to stream it here.

Thank goodness HBO is making the special available to Filipino viewers via HBO Go on the same day. Friends: The Reunion can be streamed on the 27th of May at 3:01 pm. It will also be shown on the HBO channel at 9 pm.

Are you as excited as we are?

Quick to-watch list you can check out

HBO Go

HBO Go is an often overlooked streaming app. However, there’s more than a handful of gems here that are worthy of being included in your to watch list. Here are my personal recommendations.

Godzilla vs Kong

The pandemic hasn’t been kind to the cinema-going crowd in the Philippines. Movie theaters remain closed thanks largely to the government’s lackluster pandemic response. But that’s a topic for another day. Due to this, we’ve missed going to the movies and seeing blockbusters like Godzilla vs Kong. Thankfully, HBO Go is here to the rescue.

This kaiju showdown is one of many huge films we missed seeing in cinemas. But now, it’s available on HBO Go along with other movies released in 2021 like Space Jam: A New Legacy.

On The Job: The Missing 8

Speaking of the atrocities that go on behind the scenes of the politics in the Philippines, the long-awaited follow-up to 2013’s On The Job will also stream on HBO Go. The movie will stream as a six-episode series on HBO Go. The first three episodes will show the events of the 2013 film and the last three episodes will follow the events of The Missing 8.

The story is set in a Philippines that’s leading up to a presidential election. It’s a timely watch for Filipinos that can hopefully be eye-opening for registered voters.

The Newsroom

This 2012 series depicts a fictional, dramatized version of a broadcast team. It follows an ensemble of cast members featuring everyone from the newscaster to other newsroom staffers.

While it is indeed, dramatized, it’s still a pretty good look at what a sector of “the media” goes through. It’s a recommended watch for people who wish to be a little demystified about media work. It shows some of the unglamorous side of news, the battle with executives for views/clicks, and the consequences of bungling a major news story.

For people like myself who have previous experience of working in different types of newsrooms, be ready to get war flashbacks if you decide to binge-watch this series.

Superman and Lois

Superman and Lois is likely the best live action adaptation we’ve had of the Big Blue Boy Scout. Instead of a brooding god-like figure trying to figure out how to coexist with humanity, the Superman in this series is more akin to his comic origin — an earnest, clumsy farm boy who uses his abilities to save people.

To ground Supes a little bit, the story features Clark balancing his duties as Superman and as a husband and father. The married couple dynamic between Lois and Clark is refreshing. Just as refreshing is the brotherly chemistry between their twins Jon and Jordan Kent. It’s a thoughtful take on Superman and one that everyone should see.

Teen Titans

Yes, the cool-looking one. Unceremoniously replaced by Teen Titans: Go (which is also available on HBO Go), this early 2000s series is a show I used to watch religiously as a… much younger person. It’s the first animated series in the 2000s to heavily feature sidekicks and tells various stories of friendship and teamwork.

While we’re at it, the HBO Go app is a treasure trove of DC animated series and movies. Classics like Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Flashpoint Paradox, and many more are available to wash-off the aftertaste of the DCEU.

Emmy Nominated

For some really quality shows, available on HBO Go are all of the Emmy Nominated shows. These include Lovecraft Country, Mare of Easttown, and The Flight Attendant, and more.

Watch on a big screen

These are all best experienced on a bigger screen. However, not just any big screen will do. It has to be the Samsung Neo QLED. We have an entire feature detailing why it’s an awesome TV. But that’s not all. If you purchase any participating Samsung TV product, you also get six (6) months worth of subscription to HBO Go.

You’ll have no shortage of fantastic shows and movies to watch with this HBO Go and Samsung TV combo. This offer is available until November 31, 2021.

Netflix unveils first look at live-action Sandman series

Plus a lot of other trailers

Published

on

Netflix has grown beyond expectations in the years since its rise as a streaming platform. In fact, the company already holds its own massive event called TUDUM. And yes, it’s named after the now-iconic sound that plays before every Netflix show. And (also) yes, a lot of new trailers and sneak peeks were unveiled during the event. Though the event had a lot of amazing content, the first major sneak peek of Netflix’s The Sandman headlined the entire crew.

The live-action adaptation of one of the world’s most regaled comic book series of all time has been a long time coming. Netflix announced the title in the past and revealed a stellar cast to go along with it. Playing the Lord of Dreams is Tom Sturridge. Meanwhile, Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Mason Alexander Park play Dream’s siblings Death and Desire, respectively.

Unfortunately, Netflix has not announced when the title will premiere on the platform. However, they have finally unveiled our first look of the series. The minute-long teaser shows Dream’s capture, the first story arc in the series. Though it was short, it revealed how the series will look and how Sturridge looks as the character. Currently, the Sandman series is still “coming soon” without a definite time yet.

Besides the teaser, Netflix also unveiled a few more teasers and trailer including the much-awaited fourth season of Stranger Things. The fourth season has been in the works for a while but suffered delays because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The platform also released trailers for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop and the second season of The Witcher.

There’s a real Super Mario movie coming with Chris Pratt

Coming next year

Published

on

Earlier today, Nintendo hosted its Nintendo Direct presentation for the month of September. As expected, the presentation teased a barrage of amazing titles coming for the holiday season. However, amid the new titles, Nintendo also announced a stranger title that didn’t fit in with the rest: an upcoming Super Mario movie.

If you grew up in the 90s, you might be familiar with the old Super Mario Bros. Super Show, a live-action adaptation of the iconic gaming franchise, and a more controversial movie. Though it was watchable fare for kids, the series never made an impact especially compared to the original games. Some people even view it with ironic appreciation. Undoubtedly, the new announcement is raising its fair share of eyebrows all over the world.

Nintendo has not shared any plot details or a trailer for the film yet. However, we do know that it will be an animated film from Illumination Entertainment, the same studio who made the Despicable Me series. It will also feature all the familiar characters from the franchise.

Marvel actor Chris Pratt will voice the titular plumber. Opposite him, Anya Taylor-Joy will voice Princess Peach. Charlie Day will voice Mario’s brother, Luigi. Jack Black voices the franchise’s villain, Bowser. Keegan-Michael Key makes an appearance as Toad. Finally, Seth Rogen is Donkey Kong.

The upcoming film is set for a 2022 launch.
