HMD commits to Android P update for all its Nokia smartphones

Aside from the trio of phones Nokia launched earlier today, the brand’s newfound owner HMD Global announced that every single one of its Android smartphones will receive Android P eventually. That’s awesome news for loyal users, considering how many models have come out since the start of 2017.

Android fragmentation has been a thorn in every user and smartphone manufacturer’s side since the operating system first released. Year after year, we see new versions of the open-source OS, only to wait several months (or years) for our devices to receive it.

Android Oreo, in particular, is still only found on a little over five percent of all gadgets despite being first unveiled a year ago. Making things even gloomier is the fact that Android P is already on open beta, and will experience its full-blown launch very soon.

While Nokia isn’t committing to an exact timeline, it’s great to know that they’re counting all of its users, and not just the ones who own higher-end models like the Nokia 8 and 7 Plus.

What about the Android Go-equipped Nokia 1 and 2.1? Although neither sport Android One, which guarantees firmware updates for two years and security updates for three years, HMD stresses that even those two entry-level models will get a helping of whatever the next Android dessert will be called in Go form.

This good news comes after we learned that the Nokia 7 Plus is part of the early adopters of Android P Beta. It’s mostly thanks to Nokia ensuring that Project Treble, which allows Android updates to reach the phone more seamlessly, came with the upper-midrange handset from the very start.
