Google spots major vulnerability in Galaxy S22 series

And the Pixel 6 and 7 series

A lot of smartphones are currently at the mercy of hackers. Project Zero, a team of cybersecurity analysts from Google, has just announced a major vulnerability still present in a number of devices rocking Exynos modems including the Galaxy S22 series.

According to a recent report from the team, some Exynos modems created by Samsung carry eighteen vulnerabilities. Even more concerningly, four of these vulnerabilities are dangerous enough to allow internet-to-baseband attacks. Malicious parties need only a user’s phone number to gain access to a smartphone.

The list of affected devices is lengthy. Project Zero lists the following devices with the affected Exynos modem:

Mobile devices from Samsung, including those in the Galaxy S22, M33, M13, M12, A71, A53, A33, A21s, A13, A12 and A04 series
Mobile devices from Vivo, including those in the S16, S15, S6, X70, X60 and X30 series
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series of devices from Google
any vehicles that use the Exynos Auto T5123 chipset

Naturally, Samsung’s devices are most affected by its own modem. However, other brands have also purchased the vulnerable modem for their own handsets including Google’s own devices. According to Google, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series are already rolling out patches for the vulnerability. (However, at the time of this writing, the Pixel 6 series has not received the update yet.)

Other brands have yet to release their own updates. Interestingly, these reports usually come out after an update has already been released. This is one of the rare times that a report has come before an update, leaving a host of users vulnerable. The reported vulnerabilities have already lapsed their 90-day deadline, meaning it’s up to the brand to roll out the update as soon as possible.

In the meantime, Google suggests turning off Wi-Fi calling and Voice-over-LTE while an update is in the works. Of course, doing so will drastically reduce the performance of the device, but it will come with the benefit of more security.
