HONOR Magic V3 to debut AI Defocus technology

For enhanced eye protection

Published

on

HONOR has been constantly teasing its followers with several pieces to the HONOR Magic V3 puzzle. Today, the manufacturer introduced one more puzzle piece by baring that the Magic V3 will be the first HONOR phone to debut its AI Defocus display technology.

HONOR has unveiled quite a number of groundbreaking AI innovations throughout the year, including its eye-tracking technology which was used to start a car but also has several practical applications.

First mentioned at MWC Shanghai along with HONOR’s AI Deepfake Detection feature, the AI Defocus Protection technology essentially utilizes AI algorithms to simulate traditional optical methods.

In simpler terms, users do not need to wear actual defocus glasses, but the display will act in a way as if you’re seeing it through such lenses. The innovation is inspired by “defocus incorporated multiple segments” (DIMS) used in specialized glasses. This prevents axial elongation of eye signals.

This enhanced eye protection feature will lead to reduced eye strain and transient myopia. That’s by having the device incorporate defocus signals in screen layers. In fact, according to earlier lab tests, AI Defocus reduced nearwork-induced transient myopia by 13 degrees on average.

Along with AI Defocus, the Magic V3 will come with ultra-high PWM dimming for reduced screen flicker. It shall also boast of more eye protection features, reflecting HONOR’s commitment to user health.

The groundbreaking foldable, which shall be unveiled globally at IFA 2024 next month, is currently the world’s thinnest inward-foldable smartphone.

The Magic V3 comes with breakthroughs in durability. These have been showcased by the company through various marketing gimmicks. Among which was a hydraulic press test and a washing machine test.

The Magic V2 successor boasts of a 3rd generation Silicon-carbon battery, which, along with a robust electrochemical structure, makes up for a reduced battery size and thinner form factor without compromising performance.

Its hinge, meanwhile, is fortified by a Super Steel material with a tensile strength of 21,000MPa. This is complemented by a titanium Vapor Chamber substrate. This leads to increased heat dissipation and reduced weight.

Moreover, the device’s back cover is a special fiber with a strength of 5,800MPa. The phone also became the first to pass a 2.5-meter IPX8 water resistance challenge.

These hardware improvements complement the Magic V3’s powerful processor, camera system, and slew of AI enhancements, as the phone builds a case for the foldable as one of the world’s best overall.

The razr fold enters motorola into the book-style foldable market

motorola is already saying it has the best foldable camera system in the industry.

Published

Motorola’s razr is known exclusively for only one type of foldable: the clamshell phone. Even before foldables were a thing in today’s landscape, the razr has already been creating cool kids from the aughts. Today, the lineup is flipping the story, if you will, by launching its first book-type foldable simply called the razr fold.

For the first time, the razr fold brings the horizontally folding form factor to the motorola family. The already sizable 6.6-inch external display unfolds into a larger 8.1-inch 2K LTPO main screen. Thickness wise, the folded 9.9mm thin form factor unfolds into a 4.6mm thin device. Even better, the foldable will be the world’s first smartphone to rock the newly announced Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3, which boasts 75 percent better drop performance compared to older devices.

Inside, the phone carries the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, paired with 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of internal storage. This package of performance works well whether you’re using the phone as a smartphone, in tent mode, or laptop mode (which isn’t a mode often advertised by foldables).

For cameras, the razr fold reportedly has the best foldable smartphone camera system, according to its DXOMARK Gold Label. The trio consists of a 50-megapixel Sony LYTIA 828 main sensor, a 50-megapixel Sony LYTIA 600 periscope telephoto lens, and a 50-megapixel 122° FOV ultrawide lens. This trio is paired with a 32-megapixel internal selfie cam and a 20-megapixel external selfie cam.

Finally, the razr fold will come with a 6000mAh battery, supported by 80W TurboPower, which can refuel the battery for more than 12 hours in just 12 minutes.

There’s no word on price and availability yet, but motorola says the foldable should be out in North America within the coming months.

Usually a stickler for grand launches, Apple has jumped the gun and unleased the iPhone 17e ahead of its scheduled event on March 4.

The iPhone 17e will build on the tradition started by the iPhone 16e, itself an evolution of the iPhone SE lineup. Like its predecessor, the newest member of the iPhone lineup will meld affordability with the classic iOS experience.

Inside, the iPhone 17e is powered by the A19 chip, the same one powering the main iPhone 17 series. It will also feature the latest-generation C1X modem, which promises to be twice as fast as the C1 modem in the iPhone 16e.

Meanwhile, outside the iPhone 17e is a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, sporting Ceramic Shield 2, which offers thrice as much scratch resistance compared to the previous generation, and up to 1200 nits of brightness. For durability, it has an IP68 rating.

You won’t find the large camera island in this iPhone, but it will still rock a capable 48-megapixel Fusion camera, paired with a 2x Telephoto lens. It’s capable of shooting 4K Dolby Vision videos, up to 60 frames per second.

You’ll also find the traditional fare of iPhone accoutrements including MagSafe, Emergency SOS, and Roadside Assistance.

Finally, the iPhone 17e’s battery features an all-day battery life, which can charge up to 50 percent in only 30 minutes using the USB-C charger.

Price, availability
