HP’s line of premium consumer laptops has just been updated for 2019. The Envy laptops (including the convertibles) now sport the latest Intel processors, plus the new AMD Ryzen chips with discrete-level graphics.

As always, the Envy laptops come in different sizes and styles, but they all share a modern design that gives them an edge over their competitors. While the overall look of the lineup hasn’t changed much, the bezels of the displays have been reduced.

And if privacy is a major concern, these new laptops come with a webcam kill switch that instantly turns off the PC’s camera.

Envy 13 and Envy 17

The 2019 versions of the Envy 13 and Envy 17 now come with updated eight-generation Intel Core processors and fingerprint readers for Windows Hello. As their names suggest, they come with 13- and 17-inch displays with a Full HD resolution.

The 13-inch model is designed for on-the-go users and has a promised battery life of over 16 hours. The 17-inch, on the other hand, will appeal more to casual gamers with its large display and NVIDIA GeForce MX250 graphics. The larger Envy laptop also has an optical disc drive, a rare feature to have these days.

The smaller Envy will come with 8GB of onboard memory and a 256GB PCIe SSD. With more space for hardware, the Envy 17 will have 12GB RAM and 512GB of storage with Intel Optane option.

Both HP Envy laptops will be available starting in April. Prices start at US$ 900.

Envy x360 13 and Envy x360 15

The Envy x360 models with their reversible hinges also got updated. HP didn’t reveal many details about the 2019 13-inch variant, but we do know that it has a smaller footprint than last year’s. It’ll have AMD Ryzen processor options, but they’ll be older second-gen variants.

The one that has a major update (specs-wise) is the 15-inch model. Customers will be able to get it with either eight-generation Intel Core processors or third-generation AMD Ryzen chips. The display is still a 1080p panel, but with 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage plus HDR support and pen input. Unfortunately, it’ll come with just 8GB of memory and 256GB of storage.

Pricing for the Envy x360 13 starts at US$ 700, while the Envy x360 15 will cost US$ 870 for the Intel variant or US$ 800 with an AMD processor. All models will be available in April.

The Googlebook is the next evolution of the Chromebook

Notebooks are coming later this year.

Published

on

Chromebooks did not become the go-to alternative for laptop users on a budget. Given how the market looks today, it could have been a matter of “right place, wrong time.” Today, Google is trying again with the new Googlebook lineup.

The Googlebook is different from the Chromebook. Though both platforms allow Android apps to run natively, the Googlebook will focus more on building a foundation on Gemini Intelligence.

Of course, the Android ecosystem is still a focal point. The Googlebook can run apps from the ecosystem and can connect seamlessly with Android phones. Specifically, users can access their phone’s apps and files directly from the notebook without waiting for transfers.

As for the Gemini part, the Googlebook starts by reinventing the cursor. The new Magic Pointer brings the wonder of Gemini to your mouse. A wiggle of the cursor wakes the software, which contextualizes anything it’s pointed to. For example, pointing at a date will ask you if you want to schedule a meeting. Pointing at two photos might merge the two into an AI-generated mashup.

Additionally, Create a Widget will allow you to customize software to perfectly tailor to your needs. Using Gemini, the Googlebook can collate everything you need on your dashboard.

Currently, there are no official models set to come out just yet. However, Google has confirmed that Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo have committed to bringing out the Googlebook this fall. Naturally, each of these brands will have their own take on lineup, but the one thing uniting them will be a unique glowbar to set them apart from other notebooks.
