Huawei P20 Pro’s third camera could have 40MP image sensor
A little throwback to the Nokia Lumia 1020
We’ve been flooded by leaks of Huawei’s upcoming flagship phones for a while now — from their colors to pricing — but there’s one particular feature that continues to puzzle us, and that’s the triple-camera setup of the P20 Pro.
While multiple leaked images have shown the higher-end model’s third lens beneath the usual dual-camera setup, none have been able to explain exactly what they do.
If this tweet from leakster Roland Quandt is reliable, we may be looking at a groundbreaking design:
This is the insane Huawei P20 Pro – the first Leica triple-cam smartphone – with a 40 MP main cam, 8 MP 5x hybrid zoom lens, 20 MP b/w sensor. (almost) all specs etc. here: https://t.co/Oa238dToNS

His sources claim that Huawei will combine two common smartphone camera technologies — zooming and a secondary monochrome sensor — into one system.
Smartphone manufacturers typically had to choose one or the other; it’s either their phone has optical zooming through the second camera (like on the Galaxy Note 8 and iPhone X) or an assistive black-and-white sensor to improve image detail (like with the Essential Phone and previous Huawei flagships).
As for the monstrous 40-megapixel sensor, it feels like a throwback to the Nokia Lumia 1020 that launched way back in 2013. It used the abundant number of pixels (41 megapixels to be exact) to enable lossless digital zoom, which was truly innovative in a time when dual shooters on phones weren’t a thing yet.
For Huawei to pull this off would certainly be unprecedented and push mobile photography toward the next logical direction. How well this will translate to better photos is still the question, though — something that’ll be answered once the P20 Pro launches in Paris, France next week.
