Microsoft delays Surface Neo to 2021

Last October 2019, Microsoft demoed a device that one might call as the future of laptops. Surface Neo is a revolutionary dual-screen product that reimagines what a laptop could be. Instead of a static keyboard on one side, there’s a screen that enables two windows to exist side-by-side. Originally shipping in time for this year’s holidays, it now seems like the device won’t arrive until next year.

According to ZDNet, Microsoft has decided to delay Surface Neo to 2021. While there was no clear reason why the device was delayed, there are many reasons that could have affected Microsoft’s decision. First, the ongoing pandemic may have affected the device’s manufacturing due to limited production in China. However, with most supply chain returning to normal, the pandemic may have less likely to do with the delay of Surface Neo.

Another reason could be the change in the development of Windows 10X. Foley added that the company is prioritizing the development of the OS for single-screen devices first. As such, third-party dual-screen devices like the Thinkpad Fold have to delayed too since it relies heavily on the upcoming Windows 10X.

Surface Duo is still on track

While Surface Neo is not coming this 2020, Surface Duo is still on track for the holidays. Barring any changes, Microsoft will release the dual-screen Android smartphone this year. When released, it will be the company’s first smartphone in years ever since it abandoned all efforts in developing Windows 10 Mobile.

It’s been a crazy month for Apple fans on a budget. The debuts of the iPhone 17e and the MacBook Neo have brought the classic Apple experience to a wider market. Though the former is a bright spot on its own, the new MacBook Neo is currently breaking the company’s expectations as new orders are already “supply constrained.”

Last week, Tim Cook held an earnings call (via Six Colors) which includes the latest additions to Apple’s lineup. For the affordable iPhone, Cook gave a special shoutout as “the newest addition to what is already the strongest iPhone lineup we’ve ever had.” However, he was much more appreciative for the MacBook Neo’s role in the company’s notebook lineup.

Responding to a query about the new notebook, Cook says that the company “undercalled the level of enthusiasm” generated by the MacBook Neo. He also cited “tremendous enthusiasm” for the device in his main presentation.

Though he didn’t have the numbers to bolster his claims, he did give anecdotal examples of public schools switching over to Apple from Chromebooks and Windows PCs.

Finally, he says that the MacBook Neo is currently “supply constrained,” meaning new purchases will likely come with a delay before delivery.

Outside of the corporate perspective, there has been a lot of excitement for the notebook. Even if it uses the A18 Pro chip, the MacBook Neo promises a powerful notebook experience as is typical of Apple’s more traditional MacBooks.
