After getting our attention with an outrageous $2,450 phone, Gionee decided to act normal this time and release a handset most people could call affordable.
Gionee’s Steel 2 retails for only CNY 1,299, which equates to about $190. That’s a pretty good deal for a smartphone that has it all.
You get a well-sized 5-inch HD 720p display with a fingerprint scanner on the home button below it. Combine that with the 4000mAh battery, and you could manage up to three days of battery life on a single charge.
Powering the device is a quad-core MediaTek processor and 3GB of memory. You have a choice between two models sporting either 16GB or 32GB of storage to hold all the photos taken with the 8-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front cameras.
All these features don’t sound like much, but if the similarly priced Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime is anything to go by, sub-$200 phones are becoming more capable these days.
The Android Marshmallow-based Gionee Steel 2 is currently available for pre-order in China. No word yet on shipping beyond that, but Gionee products have their way of getting through gray market channels.
