Xperia smartphones may support up to three years of Android updates

Following in the footsteps of Samsung

Published

on

Three years of OS updates may soon be a thing for Android OEMs. Samsung was the first to commit to an extended update period for its flagship and midrange devices. Now, Sony may soon follow suit for its Xperia smartphones with extended updates.

If the information from Android Next is to be believed, this year’s Xperia smartphone will come with three years of OS updates. There’s a big caveat though: only this year’s Xperia flagships will get an extra year of OS updates.

Following this scheme, both the Xperia 1 II and the soon-to-be-released Xperia 5 II will get Android 13. These flagships are both on Android 10, with an update to Android 11 coming later this year.

Older flagship models and midrange devices are unlucky though. The original Xperia 1 and Xperia 5, for example, will only get Android 11, which is exactly two years worth of OS updates. This year’s Xperia 10 II will also get Android 11 before Sony stops giving it further updates.

Finally, it’s the end of the line for the Xperia 10 / 10 Plus, 8 / 8 Lite, Ace, and XZ3 since this year’s Android 10 will be their last update. However, things could change since Sony hasn’t given its final word yet on software updates for Xperia devices.

A step in the right direction

While it is unfortunate that only this year’s Xperia flagship is getting three years of OS updates, it is still a step in the right direction. Hopefully, this move will become a status quo for the whole Xperia line in the future. Given that Sony is cooking up something on September 17, it will be exciting to hear the company’s plan regarding software updates.

This move also marks a change in the way OEMs support their smartphones. Clearly, Samsung’s commitment to three years of updates hasn’t gone unnoticed by other manufacturers. If Sony follows in Samsung’s step, it could put more pressure on other manufacturers particularly those who are reluctant to even commit to two years of software updates.

The iPhone 18 might sell out for an unexpected reason

The ongoing shortage might play a part in the phone selling out earlier than expected.

Published

on

An iPhone selling out is not news. Because of how popular the phones are, it’s within the realm of probability that Apple runs out of stock at some point. According to a new report, this year won’t be any different… but it’s for an entirely different reason.

First reported by analyst Tim Culpan, Apple is reportedly struggling to meet its demand for semiconductors for the iPhone 18 and the foldable iPhone. The ongoing memory shortage is cutting off Apple’s ability to deliver the required supply of smartphones in a timely fashion. The report even claims that TSMC, which helps produce the iPhone, is sitting on a shipment of processors, worth US$ 1 billion, that don’t have memory chips.

Now, Apple is still confident that it can weather the launch. However, if the shortage persists, the iPhone 18 generation will likely sell out much more quickly than expected.

It’s an interesting time for Apple to experience such a shortage. It’s been heavily rumored that the company will launch its very first foldable phone next month, creating a new market for the brand. Apple definitely wants this attempt to succeed after the tepid response to its last new product, the Vision Pro.
