HONOR ‘fastest-growing’ book-style foldable vendor in Europe: Counterpoint

Magic V2, Magic V3 key contributors to HONOR’s tripled market share

Published

HONOR continues to build its presence in Europe as a smartphone vendor. According to Counterpoint Research insights, the company tripled its market share in the region for book-style foldables in 2024, making it the fastest-growing book-type foldable OEM in the region.

HONOR entered the European foldables market with its Magic V series offerings in early 2023, challenging Samsung which had been the dominant player in the category.

By the end of the same year, already HONOR placed second behind Samsung in terms of book-style foldables.

The following year, HONOR’s Magic V2 accounted for 27% of book-type foldable sales in Europe, per Counterpoint.

Together, the Magic V2 and Magic V3 enabled HONOR to triple their market share from 11% to 34% that year, on a year-on-year sales growth of 377%.

Such growth meant HONOR accounted for 70% of the overall growth particularly for book-style models in Europe.

Book-style models on the rise in Europe

More and more brands have been introducing foldable smartphones in the past few years. And European markets have been receptive to them so far.

Counterpoint mentioned that clamshell-type foldable sales grew 19% from 2023 to 2024. But while they are still more prominent than book-style models due to the former’s cheaper average price, the latter is beginning to gain traction as well.

Consumers are beginning to favor book-type foldables as well. The sales ratio of clamshell-type to book-type foldables shifting from 70:30 to 55:45 by the first half of 2024 can attest to this.

Samsung-HONOR rivalry continues

Of course, eager to maintain its status as the best-selling foldable phone in Europe, Samsung launched its latest Z series offerings — the Z Fold7 and Z Flip7.

But HONOR is likewise motivated to make the most out of the momentum, with the HONOR Magic V5 launching in London on August 28.

It is currently the world’s slimmest foldable at just 8.8mm when folded. Beyond the form factor, Counterpoint said a “seamless fusion of platform-level AI and market-leading hardware” — including flagship cameras —”can be a winning combination” for HONOR.

While Samsung is still the market shares leader at 50% in 2024, this figure is actually 23 percentage points lower than the South Korean tech giant’s 2023 market share of 73%.

Another key contributor to this is the introduction of other foldables from brands like OPPO, OnePlus, and TECNO in Europe.

‘Exciting time for the industry’

Lastly, Counterpoint projects that book-type foldable smartphone sales will reach almost 4 million units a year by 2028.

That’s the equivalent of 2% of total smartphone sales. Meanwhile, foldable phones, regardless of type, are expected to reach almost 10% of sales in Europe’s premium segment. They can even reach a higher share in key markets like the United Kingdom and Germany.

With Apple reportedly working on its own foldable phone and with Google also launching the Pixel 10 Pro Fold soon, it is clear that the foldables competition in Europe is getting tighter than ever.

foodpanda relaunches cult-favorite roast chicken brand after 8 years of persistent search queries

Heritage chain Andok’s returns to the platform, driven entirely by long-term user analytics.

In the world of e-commerce and food delivery, platform algorithms usually dictate what consumers see. But occasionally, consumer behavior is so relentless that it shapes the platform’s strategy.

In a move driven entirely by long-term user analytics, foodpanda has officially relaunched Andok’s, one of the Philippines’ most iconic heritage rotisserie chains, back onto its platform after an eight-year absence.

The search bar as a digital wishlist

The decision to ink the partnership wasn’t just a marketing play. It was a response to an ongoing data anomaly. Despite being offline from the foodpanda platform for eight years, Andok’s consistently ranked as one of the most-searched merchants on the app.

Year after year, users treated the empty search results page as an unofficial wishlist. This persistent search intent gave foodpanda a clear, data-backed signal of pent-up demand.

Prior to the official digital rollout, teaser campaigns on social media validated this demand, generating thousands of organic interactions from users anticipating the return.

Bridging heritage flavor with digital infrastructure

For foodpanda, onboarding a merchant with this level of built-in demand fits its broader strategy of marketplace optimization and hyper-local network expansion, turning a heritage brand into another data point for how legacy retail plugs into delivery infrastructure.

For Andok’s, the integration works as a fast track to digital scale. A legacy quick-service chain skips years of independent app development and reaches customers already using foodpanda’s existing logistics network, on a platform they already check daily.

Andok’s built its following on charcoal spit-roasted chicken, a slow-cooked technique that’s stayed largely unchanged since the brand’s early days, alongside seasoned grilled pork belly.

More recently, the Dokito line extended that following into crispy fried chicken and chicken burgers, broadening the brand’s appeal beyond its original rotisserie format and giving foodpanda a menu with both heritage pull and everyday fast-food convenience.

Did Tim Cook just confirm that iPhone prices are going up?

Once again, it might be because of the RAM crisis.

Published

on

If there’s one thing you can count on in the smartphone world, it’s the high price of an iPhone. Unfortunately, with the ongoing RAM shortages, things might get worse. Apple’s Tim Cook has essentially confirmed that the brand is about to raise its prices.

Via an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Cook said, “Unfortunately, price increases are unavoidable.” As with other companies, the outgoing CEO is talking about the RAM crisis. With a lot of chips going to AI, consumer-ready silicon is getting scarcer and scarcer. Thankfully, some brands are shielding its users from the increases, but it’s reaching levels that aren’t sustainable for business.

“We’re doing our best to mitigate the huge increases that are being passed to us, and we’ve been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable,” he said.

Cook did not explain how much prices will go up or when. However, with the iPhone 18 series (and a potential iPhone Fold) just on the horizon, it seems nigh.

Apple isn’t the first brand to react to the shortages (nor will it be the last). Now, regardless of whether or not Apple has the capabilities to tank the crisis, the biggest culprit is still AI. Companies today are more than willing to use AI as a scapegoat, real or otherwise, for shady cost-cutting or profit-enhancing practices.
