Apple MacBook Air with M4 has a cheaper starting price

Plus, a new colorway option

A few days ago, Tim Cook said there was something in the air. He failed to mention that there is more than one something flying in the air. After suddenly announcing the iPad Air yesterday, Apple has announced another new Air device: the MacBook Air with M4.

Power underneath

As it says right there on the box, the new MacBook Air will come with the most powerful M4 chipset. The 10-core CPU will come paired with up to 10 more cores for the GPU and up to 32GB of unified memory. When compared to previous models, the new notebook performs twice as fast as the M1 model and 23 times as fast as the fastest Intel-based MacBook Air.

Besides raw power, the chipset also delivers power efficiency. The battery can last up to 18 hours on a single charge.

Apple Intelligence baked inside

The new M4 chip comes with a powerful Neural Engine which will enable Apple Intelligence out of the box. Users will get access to the growing suite of AI-based features right on the MacBook.

For example, users can create images using Image Playground, make playful emoji with Genmoji, and, of course, write complex text using Writing Tools. Apple Intelligence will also come with support for ChatGPT.

Cameras take Center Stage

The MacBook Air with M4 comes with the 12-megapixel Center Stage camera. Besides high picture quality, the webcam will automatically keep the user in the center of the frame to free them to move around while presenting.

The camera will also support Desk View. Besides focusing on what’s in front, the camera can also display a top-down view of what’s on the user’s desk, creating a simultaneous display wherein the user can present in two ways at the same time.

Pretty in blue

Besides the traditional midnight, starlight, and silver, the MacBook Air with M4 will come in a new color: sky blue.

If that’s not enough, each package will come with a color-coordinated MagSafe charge cable.

Price, availability

The MacBook Air with M4 is now available for preorders in the United States. It will drop in store locations starting March 12.

For this iteration, Apple is dropping the starting price by a hundred dollars. The 13-inch MacBook Air with M4 starts at US$ 999. Meanwhile, the 15-inch MacBook Air with M4 starts at US$ 1,199.

There’s been much ado about the NVIDIA RTX Spark. By now, you’ve probably heard a lot about the upcoming reinvention of PCs. But, as a regular consumer, it’s hard to visualize just how this revolution looks like. Thankfully, in NVIDIA’s demo suites, a few manufacturers got to showcase their take on an RTX Spark notebook. And all of them are coming out in the fall.

Unfortunately, none of these brands could share comprehensive details about their laptops beyond a promise for raw power. All of these models aren’t the final version yet.

However, just from what we can tell, these notebooks do feel different from the standard fare of laptops today. For one, they are deceptively heavier. Though all of the OEMs promise a much thinner profile, they’re either packing a lot of tech inside or are using denser materials for their chassis. But again, these are engineering units, so who knows how heavy these things will actually be?

Secondly, based on NVIDIA’s demos, they can do a lot of heavy lifting. NVIDIA says that these superchips are meant for developers and creators, but gamers will also find joy in their performance. DLSS 4.5, in particular, feels like a true revolution in terms of graphics.

Thankfully, fall isn’t too far away. If you can wait, the next evolution of PCs is just around the corner.
