Go out in style!

Fitness fam, it’s time for an upgrade!

Samsung’s Unpacked event didn’t just put the spotlight on the latest foldables. The South Korean giant refreshes its smartwatch lineup, debuting the Galaxy Watch6 and Watch6 Classic.

The new smartwatches aim to provide convenient ways to gain an understanding of one’s health and wellness through insights that are accessible right from the wrist.

Never go out of style~

Samsung brings back the Galaxy Watch6 Classic variant after being left out in the Watch5 series. It features the revered rotating bezel but is now 15% thinner than the previous Classic. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Watch6 comes with a 30% slimmer bezel, allowing the smartwatch to enhance the beauty of its signature circle frame.

The Galaxy Watch6 series refines style through a new one-click band, allowing users to easily mix and match the bands. Par exemple, a new lightweight Fabric Band and Sleep Coaching watch face would look immaculate when paired.

Furthermore, both smartwatches feature new interactive and informative watch faces that look vivid when paired with the watch’s more vibrant, higher-resolution display with a peak brightness of 2,000 nits. Reading and writing get easier on the 20% larger display, as well as smoother and faster interactions — thanks to an enhanced processor and memory.

Despite the larger and brighter display, the Galaxy Watch6 series comes with a larger battery and reduced battery consumption to keep up with the smartwatch’s performance.

Get through sleepless nights~

The Galaxy Watch6 series prioritizes better sleep, recognizing it as a key to beginning better health. The smartwatches aim to understand sleep patterns, build better habits, and establish a sleep-friendly environment.

Now, both smartwatches offer an in-depth analysis of Sleep Score Factors from total sleep time, sleep cycle, awake time, and even physical and mental recovery. There are also individualized Sleep Messages co-developed with the National Sleep Foundation.

Sleep Consistency also gives insights into how consistent the user’s sleep and wake times are, with a designated Sleep Animal symbol to represent their sleep type.  Furthermore, enhanced Sleep Coaching put sleep insights into action with tailored instructions. Tips and reminders are accessible on both the smartwatch and the paired smartphone.

Lastly, the Galaxy Watch6 helps in setting the perfect sleep environment by changing the settings of connected home electronics. It put in the work by harnessing Samsung’s ecosystem, turning on Sleep Mode across the user’s watch and phone to mute notifications, and dim screens, and even activating an invisible LED infrared sensor on the watch to deliver health insights without extra light distractions.

Fit like a daydream~

The Galaxy Watch6 series still sports a 3-in-1 BioActive Sensor to better track and record advanced health metrics such as blood pressure, heart rate, blood oxygen, cycle tracking, ECG, and more. The new smartwatches also still sport the Body Composition tool, providing insights into key physical measurements such as skeletal muscle, basal metabolic rate, body water, and body fat percentage.

The snapshot of the user’s body and fitness allows the smartwatch to offer a tailored approach to set goals and track progress. It even helps with guiding through personalized fitness and nutritional tips — thanks to a new partnership with Whisk.

Moreover, the Galaxy Watch6 series puts more focus on a new Personalized Heart Rate Zone feature, defining five optimal running intensity levels. Running gets more spotlight as a sport, since Samsung added Track Run on top of over 100 existing workout trackers, recording the user’s run on a track.

And like its predecessors, the Galaxy Watch6 series also comes with a Fall Detection feature that sends out an SOS alert when the user is in danger of falling that occurs during exercise, when standing still, or even while sleeping. (If a user falls out of bed, that is.)

Everything from your wrist~

The Galaxy Watch6 series is an Android smartwatch through and through. It utilizes WearOS, allowing users to connect their Samsung devices seamlessly and blend the smartwatch into the growing ecosystem.

Call, text, and stay updated with incoming notifications using only the smartwatch. After all, it syncs seamlessly with WhatsApp, Google Calendar, Gmail, Peloton, MyFitnessPal, and various apps that are coming soon.

Aside from that, it’s now easier to remotely control your smartphone’s camera with its upgraded Camera Controller and Camera Remote View features. Switch modes, angles, and zoom in easily when the smartwatch is paired with the Galaxy Z Flip5. Samsung emphasizes more features in navigating the ecosystem, with the Galaxy Watch6 at the center.

If a Samsung smartphone gets misplaced, the Galaxy Watch6 series can easily pinpoint its location through Find My Phone. As always, personal data on the watch remains secure thanks to the Samsung Knox security platform.

Apple reportedly gives up on the Vision Pro

But Apple will continue to sell the current model.

Published

on

When they unveiled the Vision Pro in 2023, Apple touted the wearable as the next big thing after the iPhone. Now, almost three years removed from the launch, the Vision Pro hasn’t really taken over the coveted spot occupied by the iPhone. Apple, according to a report, is allegedly canning the short-lived wearable.

According to MacRumors, Apple has reportedly given up on making the Vision Pro a thing. The team handling the wearable has supposedly been subsumed by other teams within Apple.

If true, the wearable’s end is unfortunate but not surprising. Despite being out for years, the Vision Pro has sold only a little more than half a million units with numerous returns from customers. Most recently, Apple updated the wearable with the M5 chip, but the move hasn’t revitalized the device’s status in Apple’s lineup.

Most of the complaints about the device stem from its exorbitant price or its cumbersome battery pack. Besides costing a whopping US$ 3,499, the Vision Pro is also difficult to move around with, especially because of its total weight and a battery pack that can get in the way.

To be clear, Apple has not officially discontinued the Vision Pro yet. The company continues to sell the version with the M5 chip. Apple can also restart development in the future.

However, the meantime retirement on future development does coincide with the recent restructuring inside the company. Tim Cook recently decided to step down as CEO with John Ternus as his replacement. Canning the Vision Pro might be Ternus’ first step in redefining Apple according to his plans.

YouTube makes picture-in-picture mode free for everyone globally

The update is rolling out globally now.

Published

on

Picture-in-picture (or PiP) mode is a godsend for multitaskers. The feature lets users watch videos in a tiny floating window while doing other tasks. However, the feature isn’t readily available for all users. Or wasn’t, at least. YouTube is now rolling out PiP mode for free globally.

Previously, PiP mode was exclusive to YouTube users who pay for Premium or Premium Lite. It was also exclusive to the United States.

Now, YouTube is making the feature completely free for users all over the globe. It will be available for both iOS and Android versions of the app.

There’s still a catch, though. The free version is available only for “longform, non-music content.” The same goes for Premium Lite subscribers. Music is still an exclusive feature for those who pay for the regular version of Premium. Basically, there is no change for paying users or users in the United States.

Using PiP mode is simple. All you need to do is load up a video you want to watch in the background. Then, just exit the YouTube app and go about your other tasks. The video will be inside a floating, resizable window while you look at other things.

There’s no timeline on when the update will reach your device. However, YouTube has promised that it will roll out globally within the coming months.

OnePlus has reportedly merged with realme

Both brands were previously rumored for restructuring early this year.

OnePlus 13

OnePlus has a problem. For a while now, rumors have swirled about the company’s dissolution. For their part, the company has continued to deny the reports, citing business as usual. Likely to their dismay, the reports just keep coming. Today, sources have hinted that OnePlus has merged with realme.

Back in January, it was rumored that OnePlus would be closing up shop this year. Since the company very quickly denied the rumors, the report hardly made waves. However, a suspected merger with realme is more difficult to debunk.

For one, realme is itself in a very interesting position. Also back in January, realme was reportedly moving back into being a sub-brand of OPPO. Coupled together with the OnePlus debacle, all this internal restructuring seems par for the course.

According to Digital Chat Station on Weibo, OnePlus and realme have already concluded the merger. The two brands have reportedly united their Chinese and international operations under one roof. Likewise, their marketing will be the same. Pete Lau will still be the main head for this new division.

As with anything of this nature, take this with a grain of salt. OPPO, OnePlus, and realme have not issued any official statements concerning a merger or a shutdown for any brand.
