Street Fighter 6 hits 50K active players on Steam after costumes update

Polygon report mentions latest Sagat update caused massive increase in number

Several major updates for Street Fighter 6 dropped this week, ushering the start of its third year of existence.

Supposedly, it’s the entry of Muay Thai king Sagat as the fighting game’s first Year 3 character that should have been the highlight of the batch of updates.

But, as Polygon’s Patricia Hernandez inferred, it’s the new summer-themed costumes for select characters that are causing quite a stir so far.

The new Outfit 4 costumes have been made available for Luke, Jamie, Kimberly, Manon, A.K.I., Cammy, and Chun-Li. In other words, players can play these characters in swimwear pieces.

Hernandez wrote that specifically, it’s the Chun-Li costume that is stealing the spotlight a few days after the Street Fighter 6 Sagat update rolled out:

But it’s the Chun-Li swimsuit skin leaving little to the imagination that’s turning heads in the community right now. To say that the playerbase is obsessed is an understatement.

So much so that, citing Steam Charts statistics, Hernandez pointed out how the average number of active Street Fighter 6 players rose exponentially overnight following the update’s release.

On Aug. 4, the average number of people online at the start of the day was merely around 8,600 players. On Tuesday, the evening before the drop, that number jumped to around 17,000 and rose throughout the day. By Wednesday, when the costumes became available, the number of people online exploded to an amazing 50,000 active fans.

Meanwhile, according to ActivePlayer.io, the average number of concurrent players playing Street Fighter 6 prior to the update ranged from about 8,000 to 12,000.

But when the update became available, that number soared to as high as 52,000 on the morning of August 5th.

We’re not even accounting for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4 and 4, and Xbox Series X|S stats yet.

The Polygon report went on to mention several social media posts. These center on Chun-Li causing… quite a commotion among the Street Fighter 6 community. That’s lightly putting it.

Street Fighter 6 updates

Not to get lost in all of this, the Street Fighter 6 Sagat update lets players pick the fearsome character. His moveset inspired by Muay Thai. There’s uppercuts, knees, and even fireballs for an added twist.

Sagat also has two available outfits so far, including one that pays tribute to his Street Fighter II appearance.

Getting the Year 3 Ultimate Pass and Character Pass will unlock Sagat, as well as the remaining Year 3 characters.

One of them is C.Viper. Capcom has already premiered the teaser trailer for the second character to be released in Year 3.

Or rather, they’re not, because of how addicting of a time sink these titles are. The latter two especially are built to be played over and over for weeks and months. Now, Resident Evil Requiem is working on something, so you also won’t forget about it in a few months’ time.

Via an official post on Resident Evil’s social media platforms, Capcom has confirmed that a story expansion is coming to the horror game. Currently, the base game doesn’t take long to beat, especially when compared to other RPGs today. The expansion should add more content to explore the story’s world.

Right now, Capcom can’t share a timeline for the update’s launch. However, in the meantime, the developers are cooking up a few minor updates to keep the game alive. For one, the game will receive performance updates to improve the smoothness of gameplay and fix bugs. It will also get a photo mode for all you Leon-holics out there.

Finally, in May, the base game will get a “minigame” added to the main game. There’s no word as to what this minigame is, so we’ll have to wait for when it drops.

Resident Evil Requiem is out now on all major platforms. The game features the survival horror style of the modern Resident Evil games, while serving up the classic action gameplay with the return of Leon S. Kennedy as a co-protagonist with Grace Ashcroft.

GIGABYTE and Capcom have collaborated for a limited time Resident Evil Requiem-inspired custom PC giveaway.

The setup is inspired by the title, which recently released, and includes an exclusive monitor game bundle to bring players closer to the experience.

Headlining the collaboration is the Umbrella Corporation — Level 3 Access custom rig giveaway. It is one of a kind, fully-built desktop featuring a Z890M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 ICE motherboard and RTX 5080 AERO OC SFF graphics.

The first major expansion for Where Winds Meet, the Hexi expansion, is now available. The open world action RPG’s most ambitious free-to-play expansion since its release is now accessible across PC, PlayStation, and mobile.

The Hexi expansion invites players to leave the familiar heartlands behind and step into a breathtaking, unforgiving new frontier.

Included are three major maps and nearly 20 sub-regions, urging players explore vast and diverse environments.
