Best Budget Smartphones below P15,000 (May 2017 Edition)

Published

on

Welcome to GadgetMatch’s list of the best smartphones priced below PhP 15,000! Each month, we update our selection with the budget-friendly phones we believe are most deserving of your hard-earned savings.

Even though the spotlight has been on high-end smartphones since Mobile World Congress 2017 (MWC), there have been a few surprisingly good entry-level handsets coming out lately, as well. So good, in fact, that we had to knock out some of our favorites in our February list.

Here they are in no particular order:

Honor 6x

Honor 6X / Huawei GR5 2017 / Huawei Mate 9 Lite (PhP 11,990)

No matter what name it goes by in your region, Huawei’s borderline-midrange smartphone ticks all the right boxes in our ever-evolving criteria for what makes a handset great. We fell in love with its premium build and fun dual-camera mode, which are two features previously unheard of at this price point.

REVIEW: Honor 6X (aka Huawei GR5 2017 or Huawei Mate 9 Lite)

OPPO F1s

OPPO F1s (Updated Variant – PhP 13,990)

While the F3 hasn’t rolled out yet and we’ve yet to review it, the updated F1s with 4GB of memory (up from 3GB) and 64GB of expandable storage (up from 32GB) is our top pick from OPPO. This selfie-centric midranger offers a sleek metal design, one of the fastest fingerprint sensors in the market, and a user interface anyone — even iPhone users — can appreciate.

REVIEW: OPPO F1s

ASUS ZenFone 3 Max 5.5 (PhP 9,995)

ASUS has been releasing ZenFone 3 variants like there’s no tomorrow, but the one offering the most value for the price is the 5.5-inch ZenFone 3 Max. It’s the larger version of the original ZenFone 3 Max, and borrows the faster camera of the ZenFone 3 Laser.

Redmi 4 Prime

Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime (PhP 8,700)

Xiaomi’s best-ever entry-level smartphone first came to mind when forming this list. The Redmi 4 Prime has everything: a responsive fingerprint scanner, sturdy metal body, a battery that lasts days, and surprisingly good camera, making it so complete for such a low price.

REVIEW: Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime

Vivo Y53

Vivo Y53 (PhP 6,990)

When you talk about great value, you must include Vivo’s Y53. Despite having no fingerprint scanner, its processor and build quality are among the things you used to find on phones twice the price of this handset — truly a serious consideration when you can’t spend more than PhP 7,000.

You can now connect your Spotify account to ChatGPT

Seamless integration for personalized picks, more

Published

on

Spotify is now available on ChatGPT, with users in 145 countries already able access the live feature. This gives listeners a new way to discover and enjoy music and podcasts.

With the integration,  both Free and Premium users can bring Spotify into their ChatGPT chats to get personalized recommendations. That goes from playlists that match your mood to podcasts based on your interests.

To get started, simply mention Spotify in your ChatGPT prompt, connect your account, and start discovering.

From there, simply ask for songs, artists, playlists, or podcast episodes. ChatGPT will automatically bring up the Spotify app in your chat and use relevant context to accomplish the task.

Alternatively, ask for recommendations based on a mood, theme, or topic, and Spotify will surface personalized picks seamlessly within the flow of your conversation.

Tapping a track will open the Spotify app, allowing you to listen and watch directly from there.

Furthermore, you can also extend an existing ChatGPT conversation, like planning a weekend road trip, by asking Spotify to create the perfect soundtrack.

For best results, add details like genre, mood, or artist for music, or a topic, host, or guest for podcasts.

Save steps

The way it all looks, the integration saves mobile users a few taps and switching from one app to the other. That’s if they’ve initially opened the ChatGPT app and decided to listen to music or podcasts via Spotify.

And like the aforementioned example, it saves users thinking about a curated playlist.

Or, when people are driving, they can just talk to ChatGPT for specific commands. It’s about the Spotify account access. You can start connecting by opting in; and you can disconnect at any time.

Throughout the experience, artists and creators’ work stays protected. Spotify will not share music, podcasts, or any other audio or video content for OpenAI training purposes.

The feature is now live for all ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Pro users on web and mobile.

It’s in early days, and both parties will continue to build, refine, and improve the experience over the coming weeks and months.

It’s intriguing if Gemini will come up with its own version for the music streaming app’s Google counterpart, YouTube Music.

ROG has officially announced the arrival of the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X in the Philippines. These are powered by the latest AMD Ryzen Z2 Series processors.

Price and availability

The ROG Xbox Ally X is priced at PHP 56,995. Meanwhile, the standard ROG Xbox Ally will retail for PHP 36,995. Both will be available starting October 16, 2025, at ASUS and ROG Exclusive Stores nationwide.

Pre-orders run from October 7 to 16. The first 100 customers who sign up will receive a free ROG Xbox Ally 2-in-1 Premium Case worth PHP 2,995. Each purchase also comes with a Game Pass subscription and a 2-year international warranty. Interested buyers can learn more or register at ROG’s official pre-order page.

Built for all-day gaming comfort

The new ROG Xbox Ally Series was designed with player comfort in mind. Both models feature an all-new chassis with improved ergonomics, redesigned palm rests, and Xbox-inspired texturing for a better handheld grip. The ROG Xbox Ally X also includes impulse triggers, adding tactile feedback for more immersive gameplay.

Seamless Xbox experience

Working closely with Xbox, ROG has optimized the Ally’s software for a true handheld Xbox experience on Windows 11. Players are greeted with a full-screen Xbox interface at startup. It offers easy navigation, customizable widgets, and quick access to settings via the Game Bar.

Despite the streamlined experience, users still retain the freedom of a full Windows PC — meaning mods and non-Xbox games remain accessible.

Power meets efficiency

Under the hood, the ROG Xbox Ally X runs on the new AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme Processor. It delivers high performance for demanding titles.

Meanwhile, the base ROG Xbox Ally is equipped with an AMD Ryzen Z2 A Processor. It’s built for balanced performance and better battery life.

Both models support AMD’s latest features — including FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), Radeon Super Resolution (RSR), and Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) for smoother gameplay.

Optimized for handheld play

Xbox has also introduced a Handheld Compatibility Program, tagging titles as Handheld Optimized or Mostly Compatible to ensure smooth play on launch.

The program works alongside features like shader preloading for faster load times and upcoming AI-powered tools, such as Automatic Super Resolution and AI-generated highlight reels, which will roll out next year.

Designed to go anywhere

The ROG Xbox Ally 2-in-1 Premium Case was built specifically for the new handhelds, featuring a water-resistant shell, weather-proof zippers, and a soft inner lining. It also includes a detachable pouch for the 65W charger — ideal for on-the-go protection.

YouTube has become ‘new TV’ in the Philippines, drives better ROI for ads

A major shift in the content consumption landscape

Published

on

YouTube has effectively become the “new TV” in the Philippines and is delivering a significantly better return on investment (ROI) for advertisers, a Google-commissioned Nielsen study has found.

The report pretty much attests to the massive migration of Filipino viewers from scheduled programming to on-demand and creator-driven content, with nine out of 10 Filipinos using YouTube.

In addition, the Nielsen study mentions that 88% of rural Visayas and Mindanao also use YouTube daily. It is a fundamental change in how Filipinos, especially the younger generations, use content.

And it’s not just about short clips; even primetime entertainment, news, and educational programs are being watched more frequently on YouTube.

The development is likewise beneficial for business. Nielsen says in the country, YouTube is 3.86 times more effective than linear TV and 2.71 times more effective than other digital platforms as a medium for advertising.

Moreover, according to a survey conducted by Kantar, 90% of surveyed viewers in the Philippines agree that YouTube has the most trusted creator content.

This figure outperforms the competitive average of 77% across Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

Same trend in the U.S.?

On a larger scale, the trend in the Philippines parallels the content consumption landscape in the United States.

According to a June 2025 Nielsen report of The Gauge, streaming has notched a record 44.8% of total TV usage last May. This percentage narrowly eclipsed the combined 44.2% for broadcast and cable TV.

Of the 44.8% viewership share, 12.5% came from YouTube. Other major streaming platforms in the country include Netflix (7.5%), Disney (5.0%), Prime Video (3.5%), Roku (2.5%), and Paramount (2.2%).
