Apple might start charging you for Apple Intelligence in a few years
Putting a price tag on AI
Everyone is getting an AI assistant. Apple, Google, and Samsung all have their own versions of AI-based software. Right now, these new features are free with a new smartphone. However, it’s only a matter of time before companies start charging for more premium features. Apple, according to a new report, might charge users for Apple Intelligence starting in 2027.
Earlier this year, Apple announced Apple Intelligence, its own version of an AI assistant. Much like other assistants, Apple’s take can write comprehensive text based on a prompt. It can also generate images, though. This upcoming feature can create content for you to use in presentations or AI-based profile pictures for your contacts.
Because it was just announced, the actual software is still forthcoming with the upcoming iPhone 16 series. Only fragmentary versions are available through the current iOS 18 betas. However, when the flagship series drops, everyone will get access to Apple Intelligence. Plus, Apple will deliver more features over the years.
While Apple develops its AI into a more complete product, it will continue being free. However, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company might start charging users in three to four years. The paid system will likely be on a subscription basis: pay per month to use Apple Intelligence’s most premium features.
Of course, this all assumes that AI will still be a thing years from now. Despite how much companies are pushing AI onto consumers, there’s no indication that AI, as a smartphone feature, will continue to exist in the future.
