Xiaomi ties with Samsung in smartphone market share in India

We were already aware that Xiaomi was bound to overtake Samsung in smartphone market share in India. We just didn’t expect it to happen so soon.

In the latest IDC report, Xiaomi is in a virtual tie with Samsung at the top spot for the third quarter of 2017. This means the two companies shipped the same number of smartphones from July to September in India, leading to the 23.5 percent market share each brand has.

This is a major breakthrough for the India smartphone market. Samsung had a tight grip on the top spot for ages, but with this development, the flood gates are gradually opening up for the competition.

Xiaomi’s strength is in their balanced sales across both offline and online platforms, as well as the aggressive pricing the company is well known for. The Redmi Note 4 is still the best-selling smartphone in India with shipments reaching approximately four million units in this quarter alone.

The top two brands are followed by Lenovo, OPPO, and Vivo, all of which are have a competitive fight for the third spot.

Just last week, Xiaomi broke into the Western Europe market with two official stores opening in Spain. The newfound focus for offline sales is proving to be a great move for the Chinese manufacturer, and their progress is only getting better.
