A new bezel-less Vivo Apex concept phone is set to be unveiled in China

Vivo’s next innovation is coming very soon

The month-long break between Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and Mobile World Congress (MWC) is usually quiet and unexciting. Manufacturers are trying to hold off their announcements. That’s not the case this year though, as we have another upcoming event by Vivo.

Shortly after OPPO unveiled their new 10x lossless zoom and large surface in-display fingerprint technology, Vivo is now taking over the stage with an all-new Apex concept phone. The event will take place in China on January 24.

Based on the event’s poster announcement, the Apex 2019 phone will still have a bezel-less display, just like its predecessor. An earlier, obscure teaser on Weibo hints at curved edges or even a new “waterdrop” design.

Vivo has been pretty good at keeping the new Apex phone a secret. We’ll just have to wait for the official announcement to know more about it. Most likely, it’ll be a concept phone, but it won’t be long until it becomes a commercially available device like the Vivo NEX.

If we were to speculate, the Apex 2019 could have the latest Snapdragon 855 processor, at least 8GB of memory, and an in-display fingerprint reader. The previous Apex phone already has an incredible 98 percent screen-to-body ratio, so maybe Vivo will try to stretch it closer to 100.

Samsung Galaxy Fold stars in hand-on video, shows visible crease

The problem with foldable phones

Samsung Galaxy Fold | GadgetMatch

While we still wait for foldable phones to become available for purchase, we get to see early reports of first-hand experiences. The Galaxy Fold from Samsung is slated to come to stores for almost US$ 2,000 and we’re dying to take it for a spin. Unfortunately, Samsung doesn’t let the media use the Galaxy Fold yet, unlike Huawei which let us play with the Mate X.

Thankfully, there’s a short YouTube video showing a working Galaxy Fold. The demo during Samsung’s Unpacked event was done meticulously, so this raw and unscripted hands-on clip gives us more insights about the foldable phone.

The 2-minute clip originated from Vietnam, home to one of Samsung’s manufacturing plants. The device on the video is an AT&T-branded version for the US market.

The video neatly shows the futuristic phone showcasing the user interface and folding mechanism. What’s interesting to see though, is the visible crease on the unfolded screen.

For a phone this expensive, buyers wouldn’t want to have an obvious crease in the middle of their large and vibrant 7.3-inch display. It’s unclear if the Galaxy Fold appearing on the video is a final retail version or an early prototype.

Check out the full video here:

Crease and fold marks are the early issues of folding phones. Even the prototypes of the Huawei Mate X have something similar. Despite the arising issues, foldable phones are still bleeding-edge tech. We hope Samsung will be able to find a fix for this before the Galaxy Fold’s official April 26 launch in the US.

MediaTek-powered Nokia 5.1 gets updated to Android 9 Pie

Fulfilling the Android One promise

Another week, another Nokia phone gets Android Pie. Just shortly after serving the latest Android version to Nokia 3.1, HMD Global has announced that the Nokia 5.1 will start receiving the Android Pie update.

The Nokia 5.1 was first unveiled in May 2018 and it had Android Oreo at launch. With the announcement of Android Pie later that year, HMD Global was quick to promise that all Nokia phones under the Android One program will be updated, and that included the Nokia 5.1.

The phone’s specs are pretty modest, so it’s always nice to see a manufacturer fully support a budget phone. Even with a MediaTek processor, HMD Global is still able to push Android Pie, unlike other manufacturers.

As always, the update will bring new features including navigation gestures, adaptive brightness, adaptive battery, a redesigned UI, and predictive app actions. After Pie, we also expect the Nokia 5.1 to get Android Q in the future since Android One promises major updates for two years.

So far, HMD Global has done a good job of updating its Nokia smartphones, despite the slight hiccups. Their Android Pie checklist is almost finished with only the Nokia 1 and Nokia 3 left.

Huawei P30 and P30 Pro revealed as more leaks surface

Plus this amazing travel video!

In a few days, Huawei will launch this year’s first flagships — the Huawei P30 series. Previously, several rumors speculated on the lineup’s features. A lot of them landed in the unverified bin. At the very least, the company revealed the only confirmed feature: an incredible superzoom camera.

Based on Huawei’s own “leaks,” the Huawei P30 Pro will have a periscope camera. Since then, we’ve seen photos of the moon and other samples.

Now, another remarkable source has allegedly created a sample of the P30 Pro’s camera. On March 19, cinematographer Parker Walbeck released a travel video on his YouTube channel. Curiously, the video’s title — “I was the first to shoot with this unreleased smartphone camera, and it’s AMAZING!” — raised a lot of eyebrows. The timing was just too perfect.

The video itself showcases a lot of amazing shots in Cancun. Walbeck confirms that it is “the best overall smartphone camera that [he’s] used.” Additionally, he commends the phone’s amazing optical and digital zoom capabilities, capturing usable shots even when fully zoomed in.

To be fair, Walbeck admits that post-production added in color grading. Likewise, many shots were taken with a 3-axis gimbal stabilizer.

Around the same time, two short usage videos popped up on Twitter and YouTube. One video showcased the under-screen fingerprint reader’s speed — less than a second! Another video confirmed the return of the headphone jack on the standard P30.

Finally, Amazon Italy leaked a bundle featuring the Huawei P30 Pro. According to the listing, the bundle — which includes a wireless charger and a speaker — will launch for EUR 1,024 (or around US$ 1,162).

The timeliness of these leaks strategically hovers around Huawei’s own target date — March 26. Regardless of their accuracy, these leaks have accomplished one thing: build hype for Huawei’s next flagship.
